Re: Swine Flu Pandemic - Preparation

I hadn't even thought of a government-mandated vaccination program; just made the assumption that people are paranoid enough about this flu strain that they would choose to get vaccinated as soon as a vaccine was available. I know I will!

Yes, I may be too optimistic.

Re: Swine Flu Pandemic - Preparation

John, Sorry for the delay in responding to your direct comment: >It's really hard for me to see how a vaccine could make much >difference. >Let's assume the best scenario: A vaccine is developed by September, >and it's still effective against whatever mutated virus emerges in the >Fall. >Then you're...

Re: Swine Flu Pandemic

The seasonal flu vaccine each year provides some protection, if not complete protection, from the most common circulating strains of the virus. It is very rare for the vaccine to be completely ineffective. We are in one of those rare situations right now. Please read again my explanation of how the ...

Re: Swine Flu Pandemic

Very nice analysis, John!

One big difference between now and 1918: we expect to have a vaccine ready before the next (2010) flu season really kicks in.

Re: Swine Flu Pandemic

Last I heard, the Powers that Be aren't anything as a "swine flu" vaccine for humans- they are being very clear that there will be no vaccine against this new strain of influenza for many months (September?). The normal seasonal flu vaccine is made up of antigens (aka, things the immune system react...

Re: Swine Flu Pandemic

Witchiepoo, Could you post a link to an article from a reputable source that claims that CDC is making that effort? I can look into it, but so far I haven't heard anything about it. What I have heard direct from CDC sources is that the swine flu cannot be caught from pork or other meat products. So ...

Re: Swine Flu Pandemic

Hi everyone, There was an all-hands meeting at CDC this morning, and I wanted to update everyone one some of the info that came out of that. Before I do, I want to make the observation that the information I am getting as an "insider" is not much more than is available at the CDC website or any numb...

Re: Swine Flu Pandemic

Just got back to the modern world after a weekend camping trip, and this is what I find waiting for me! Some thoughts: 1) I take this seriously. I called up my hubby and asked him to get masks, gloves, and a gallon of milk. 2) Some uninformed people are saying that since this new virus is recombinan...

Re: Inflation, deflation, gold and currencies

What I see happening is that some things are getting less expensive (ie, furniture, vacation travel, fancy electronics, anything else we can do without) while other things are getting more expensive (ie, food, utilities, anything else we really have to have). Note that I don't say I "foresee" this h...
