So not only is a PPI of 8.6% really high, it is moving up really fast.
When companies see their input costs going up at 8.6% and the bank pays them 0.25%, they are better off ordering extra supplies than leaving money in the bank. When every company does this, you get all kinds of shortages, like we see now, and more inflation. But the higher the inflation, the worse it is for a company to sit on cash or bonds (the velocity of money goes up). In fact, with such low interest it is better for a company to borrow money and order supplies before they need them. The more companies that do this, the higher the inflation. But the higher the inflation, the more important it is to order supplies ahead of time and not hold cash or bonds. So it can feed on itself. What the government should do is let interest rates go up to 10% or so (Volker move), but they won't as that will bankrupt the government and crash the economy. They can no longer "do the right thing". So soon the government will make laws against "hoarding" and inflation will keep going up.
