Virtually everyone was blind to something like this happening. I remember when someone in the FBI first warned after the first World Trade Center attack that Bin Laden would try again. Hell, if the bomb had been slightly more powerful, he would have succeeded the first time.

Could this have been prevented? In all honesty, I don't think so. Even the best intelligence is far from perfect. They planned this attack for years, and knew the standard procedure for hijackings and that we wouldn't consider that they would actually kill everyone. Even some of the hijackers thought it was a standard procedure.

The interesting part of this New York Times article is not what is contained in it.

The interesting part is the fact that during a time of multiple generational crisis that threaten the very existence of the republic known as the United States,

The greatest newspaper in the United States elects to only conduct a major investigation of events that are not related to the current crisis or the pending major elections.

That's assuming you consider the New York Times to be a great paper, which I do not. It's the usual blame game political crap.

If Pres. Bush had taken action against Bin Ladin for what the article claims was known concerning the attacks, the New York Times would have complained that Bush was acting without provocation, justification, or without Constitutional authority, or any other excuse they deem fitting.
