This is an interesting story, and possibly very significant.

It comes the day after Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan
suffered significant setbacks in Sunday's election, losing to the
opposition in Ankara and possibly in Istanbul as well.

Turkey is in an economic crisis, with 20% unemployment, 20% inflation
rate, and 40% fall of the lira currency in the last year.

If you want the yummy yummy meat of the pig in the nearby bush, why attack the bear across the river?
Because America will come to the aid of Japan instantly.
There is a (however remote) chance that the bear will not attack. If you attack both the pig and the bear then you've guaranteed that both will attack, foreclosing on the possibility that the bear might not have attacked.

PLUS, if the bear that you DIDN'T attack attacks you you can claim victimhood, giving you the possibility that the beaver and the moose will (somehow) take pity on you, as they're not very fond of the pig themselves.

If China attacks Japan, China's not a victim.

If North Korea struck South Korea and was henceforth stunned they would probably sue for agreement in order to keep up a vital separation from the western counterattack.

If President Moon is still leading the South, then yes, he would surrender. If a conservative is the president, Korea will fight to the death.
