I wouldn’t think environmental terrorists would be able to place a 100 Kg bomb. Bombs reek of a state actor. Iran doesn’t look involved in this one. North Korea is distant. The US likely has the capability along with Russia. I can’t see a US motivation, but sure they can be twisted. Russia has been talking energy blocking Europe for a while, and might possibly want to blame the mysterious saboteurs. Russian submarine and support ships have been active in the area, but they are always active in the area.

I am leaning towards blaming Russia, but am hardly sure. I sympathize a lot with Xeraphim on this one.

Russia has made repeated threats to disrupt Europe’s energy supplies this winter to bully the West into dropping its support for Ukraine. The likelihood of attacks taking place against pipelines even prompted the Biden administration to alert the German government, which has relied heavily on Russia for its energy needs, to take the appropriate precautions.
The possibility of Russia carrying out such an attack, moreover, was flagged up earlier this year by Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the head of Britain’s Armed Forces, when he warned of the “phenomenal increase in Russian submarine and underwater activity in the past 20 years” which has been initiated by the Kremlin precisely to carry out this type of attack against key Western infrastructure.

Yesterday I heard an analyst on TV give
the reasons why the pipeline sabotage
does not benefit Russia . The following
is my summary of what she said , based
on memory:

You have to separate oil from gas. Oil
can be delivered in different ways. Gas
requires pipelines, since LNG transport
is fairly limited.

You have to separate eastern gas from
western gas. Russia is 11 time zones
wide, so gas produced in the east can be
delivered to China over existing
pipelines.

But gas produced in the west has nowhere
to go if the pipelines to Europe cannot
be used. Instead, that gas will be
entirely dead to the market. (I can't
remember her exact phrase, but I recall
the word "dead".)

On Friday in Kabul, a massive explosion
blew up a Shia Hazara girls school. No
one has claimed credit, but it's most
likely to be ISIS-K. Whichever
terrorist group it was, there was no
obvious benefit to them except
notoriety.

It's by analogy to this that I reached
the personal conclusion that the
pertrators of the pipeline explosions
were environmental terrorists.

The recent terrorists in Kabul and acts of eco terrorism were not at all comparable technology wise to the Nord Stream bombings. Sure, even the smallest terrorists groups can hit an unhardened building on land, hurt a minority, or mail a bomb. There seems to be nothing - not even from the save the whale people - that deals with precision underwater attacks on hard targets. The more typical eco tactic is to hammer spikes into trees in hopes of ruining saws. Something that dumps a pollutant into the sea does not sound like an eco terrorist action. In fact, the leak of a lot of methane gas - a greenhouse pollutant - is of considerable environmental concern.

Granted, it still doesn’t make sense. Someone in Russia would have to want to blame someone else for the gas lack and make sure it was permanent. It would almost have to be Putin. Still scratching my head here.

The path to World War III - this week

- Putin announces a mass mobilization

- Tens of thousands of young people
flee from Russia across the

- Putin announces sham referendums in
four Ukrainian regions

- The people in the four regions voted
(at gunpoint) by 98% margins to become
Russian citizens in the Russian
Federation

- India is shipping arms to Armenia,
putting Armenia clearly in Russia's
camp.

- Ukraine announced that it will apply
for Nato membership

- Putin signed documents making the
four regions officially part of the
Russian Federation.

- Putin announced that these regions
were now Russian territory, and any
attack on this would be met with the
harshest retaliation including,
possibly, nuclear retaliation.

- Putin ignored the fact that
Ukraine's army was already attacking
some of the regions. Zelenskyy
rejected the sham referendums and the
annexations, and vowed that the army
would not stop fighting until it had
driven the Russian army back inro
Russia.

- Leaders of America, Nato, Canada,
Britain, and the EU all rejected the
sham referendums and the annexations,
and vowed massive retaliation if even
one inch of Nato territory were
attacked.

Putin is cornered and desperate.
What will he do next?
