I have appreciated the point of views from those with first hand knowledge of what is going on in Asia.

With regards to South Korea, I have always thought that if the civilian government were to actually do something material to reduce the effective defense of their country, that the South Korean military would step in and take over. After all, they were actually in control for decades (60s to early 90s).

What can others tell us regarding this possibility in the current environment?

I live in South Korea, and I don't see that happening. The young would never support a dictatorship again. Democracy can function during wartime. At most, Korea would elect a hawkish president like Lee Myung-bak or Park Geun hye. (Well, Park is serving a long prison sentence and Lee was just released from prison, so they wouldn't be allowed to run again... )

Young and middle-aged Koreans believe strongly in democracy now. Only old people would support another dictatorship.

A very prosperous area means people with a great deal of debt.

What does it look like in the poor areas?

The "poor" are using their stimulus checks to buy new plasma screens, Domino's pizza, and beer. They get hungry watching porn.

Wait a minute.

Isn't it Filipina wife?
Yeah, it is. But I'm giving myself a pass because she still mixes up the gender of pronouns. :D

Downtown retail here has been struggling for years, losing three department stores, a Barnes & Noble and just about everything else other than restaurants. I feel very bad for the latter since they've been closed for some six weeks now. I'm sure a lot, even the ones that have been open for 10-20 years, won't be able to come back. And this is in an area where we've added 5,000+ high priced residential units at the same time. Good thing we have Amazon because there won't be much else available.

I went to the grocery store last night and everything Is going up. More expensive. Stocked up on meat and canned goods yesterday. The ole mighty dollar is not going to go very far. Food prices going UP especially with supply chain being halted.

People are so terrified of this virus. Even if they open up the entire country next week, the damage has been done, and people aren't going to consume junk like they used to. The US hasn't had an economy for a long time, and the fluff services economy we lived on for the past 20 years is gone.

The crisis isn't here yet, people don't get that, they think only about the virus and when can they go back to work. They don't have a clue the problems have hardly begun, our system as we know it is imploding. Hyper-inflation is right behind. Prepare! A good time to go plant based because anything meat will be done!
Having to go plant based is a liberal dream. If meat is not being bought into stores nothing else is going to come in either. If you are talking about this plant based fake meat garbage you are really nuts. The meat industry is not going anywhere as long as anything else is functioning!

Is the world still on track for WW 3? Because how will one start with everyone locked down and bankrupt? Revolution seems more likely than WW 3?
