Ukraine & EU - may sign trade pact - or - already have ?

Post by Reality Check »

John wrote: The issue that originally triggered the months of protests and counter-protests was a desire by many in Ukraine to sign a trade agreement with the European Union, something that was bitterly opposed by Putin and Russia. The new agreement removes the demand that Ukraine be "unaligned," but it's not clear what would happen if Ukraine decided to sign the agreement after all, or to apply for membership in Nato.
As noted by CNN,

the interim government of Ukraine has already (on March 21st, 2014 ) signed the agreement ( the same EU Trade Agreement ) that the most recent elected Ukrainian President refused to sign at the last minute in late 2013, a move that repudiated the promises he made when running for office in 2010. This broken promise triggered the protests that climaxed when the last elected President of Ukraine ran away to Moscow claiming he feared for his life.

The border tightening requirements of that agreement was one of the reasons Russia had to act now, or lose Ukraine and Moldova forever.
