Obama Administration Backs Down on Sanction Threats

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Obama administration was threatening swift action on new sanctions on Russia.

The position of the Obama administration was, then, that those new sanctions were only delayed at the time of the Geneva talks to give Russia a few days to keep their ( Russia's ) promises at Geneva and instruct the pro-Russian Militias to stand down and surrender the buildings in eastern Ukraine those militias had occupied.

The Obama administration was telling anyone, and everyone, the President expected to see Russia moving promptly over the weekend, or early this week at the latest, to convince Pro-Russian Militias occupying government buildings in Eastern Ukraine to lay down their arms and surrender the buildings.

The urgency of prompt Russian action to accomplish this, to avoid new imminent sanctions, was emphasized over, and over again, for the past three days.

The Obama white house today, Monday, April 21st, backed off those threats of imminent sanctions:

White House spokesman Jay Carney said pro-Russian militants in eastern Ukraine must lay down their arms and abandon occupied buildings. He said Russia has influence over Ukrainian separatists and warned Moscow to live up to commitments last week to help stabilize the conflict or risk further sanctions.

Carney offered no timeline that would trigger those sanctions.

It looks like the buildings in Eastern Ukraine are going to remain occupied and no new sanctions for the indefinite future.

Yet another Obama red line was, apparently, drawn and ignored without consequences.
