Are you talking about Xers in general, or politicians? Big difference.

Having just participated in a local political campaign, it has become very clear to me that one does not need to be a government official to make the world a better place.

Another thing. I think I'm using the word "motives" in a deeper psychological sense than you are. One does not change one's underlying motives at will. Whether or not one sees value in the universe at large is an ingrained personality trait. Once you're an adult, it's virtually impossible to change it.
