    • “You’re not Putin, or Modi, and you’re certainly not Trump,” Xu wrote of the Communist Party leader. “You flirt with Cultural Revolution fanaticism, but you are no true-believing Leftist; you lurch towards bellicose nationalism, but you’re no hawk, either. You’re a big nothing.”

Having this while world wide debt was already at record highs in almost every sense and shutting down the economy (more expenses, less revenue) might end up being what pushes us over the edge here.

This is one where two of my favorite commentaries are differing. Always like the reporting here and Karl Denningers The Market Ticker. He thinks the asymptomatic numbers here very high and this is being blown very much out of proportion (not that certain populations shouldnt be taking precautions though or the final few exponential growth spikes won't effect things).

** 25-Mar-2020 World View: Optimism

Here's an e-mail message from a reader:
> "I've been reading you daily for about a decade, and
> while I respect your opinions and predictions greatly, I usually
> place them at the "most pessimistic" end of the scale.

> After reading today's weblog post I almost did a double-take
> because it seems uncharacteristically optimistic, i.e., we might
> eventually get out of this mess while having avoided millions of
> deaths. Did I read you wrongly?"
Optimism ... pessimism ... it's all a mirage. We're all trapped in a
movie theatre watching a horror movie, and they've locked the doors so
we can't escape. The movie isn't optimistic. The movie isn't
pessimistic. The movie just IS. The movie is life.

Anyway, I didn't exactly say what you say I said. We're firmly on
the path of the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. So there are still going
to be millions of deaths.

But what I wrote about is how the country's economy can continue as
the pandemic goes and flows, and people continue to die, even though
people are avoiding "gatherings," and are keeping a "social distance."
That's exactly the same problem that the people had in 1918 and 1919.

So that's both bad news and good news. The good news is that people
won't die of starvation. The bad news is that people will die of
coronavirus. The news is neither pessimistic nor optimistic. This
time it's not different. What's old is new again. There's nothing
new under the sun.

Dying of starvation would be worse, of course. On the whole, that "trade-off" is quite good news.

But, that only applies to "the West". Unless some strange quirk in the workings of the "non-West" proves that that's not correct.

It MAY not matter in the "non-West" if people will both starve because of "economic dysfunction" and people suffocate from the virus.

By "not matter" I mean "won't overly affect the local society". Marginal economies are so close to the bone that those that survive a "downturn" are grateful for having done so, and those that don't survive... DIE, and are mourned by their loved ones, who carry on grateful they're not dead.

Individuals in those societies are USED to that. It doesn't affect those societies overly, as it's the norm.

"So what..!!?", I hear people saying.

This is a First World problem, or a First-ish World problem (non-trivial modern-ish economies), and we are robust enough to literally freeze the mechanism with the proverbial Scrooch Gun, and bring it back as per the settings on the Gun's right side, er,.. left side, actually.

** 25-Mar-2020 World View: Spanish Flu blood transfusions

One of the techniques being tested now in trials is to take the blood
from a recovered Covid-19 patient, extract the plasma which contains
the Covid-19 antibodies, and inject the plasma into another patient.

A similar technique was used in 1918 to treat Spanish Flu patients.
According to a research paper:
> "Transfusions with blood products taken from people
> who had recovered from Spanish influenza may have reduced risk for
> death and improved symptoms of hospitalized patients who
> contracted Spanish influenza complicated by pneumonia. Early
> treatment was superior to later treatment. Researchers studied
> medical literature published shortly after the 1918 Spanish flu
> pandemic and found eight relevant studies."
-- Analysis Of Spanish Flu Cases In 1918-1920 Suggests Transfusions
Might Help In Bird Flu Pandemic

** 26-Mar-2020 Calling all Koreans

Are there still any Koreans still watching this thread?

If so, how are you doing? How is South Korea doing?

South Korea is being held up as a model for the United States and the
world to follow. Did South Korea succeed?

As a related matter, have you heard any rumors from North Korea? The
North Koreans are claiming that since they closed the border to China,
there are no cases of coronavirus in North Korea.

** 26-Mar-2020 World View: Coronavirus lockdowns

I've watched most of Trump's coronavirus press conferences. These
press conferences go on for one or two hours, and Trump answers
hundreds of questions. Often he answers the same question many times
the same day and on consecutive days. Trump said that he wants to
start putting the country back to work by Easter. Sometimes he used
different words, sometimes he hedged, but the intent was always
obvious. At today's press conference he said that people should start
going back to work in some parts of the country by Easter, and that he
would provide further guidelines on Monday. It was clear that he was
strongly urging this, though not ordering it. To say that "Trump
called for ending coronavirus lockdowns by Easter" is, in my opinion,
the best and most precise summary of all the different ways he
described his intent. Anyone who did not see the actual press
conferences, but instead depended on mainstream news media reports,
would not be likely to have any idea what's going on.
