Considering the current state of the supply chain and the emptiness of shelves, even if you could determine the time to buy last minute - I am going to predict that what you could buy will not be what you need to buy. Cut out unnecessary expenses now, and use the funds to store supplies.

US military shocked: China flew hypersonic nuke capable missile around the globe; ‘We have no idea how they did this’: report

In August, China tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile that flew around the earth before hitting its target, a new report first revealed Saturday. U.S. officials were reportedly surprised by China’s capabilities.

The missile circled the earth in low-orbit space and sped down to its target, though it landed some two-dozen miles away from its intended target. Those familiar with the test and briefed on intelligence told Financial Times that the test demonstrated major hypersonic weapons progress – more than the U.S. realized – and raised concerns that the U.S. has been underestimating China’s military capabilities.

“We have no idea how they did this,” one of five people familiar with China’s test told Financial Times.

China’s test shows that the weapon could theoretically fly over the South Pole, potentially countering U.S. missiles that focus on a North Pole route, two people familiar with the test said.

The U.S. military has been keeping an eye on China’s rapidly expanding nuclear weapon capabilities, as it is not bound by weapons control agreements. Earlier this year, two top military figures remarked on China’s new weapon progress, and satellite photos also exposed three separate fields filled with hundreds of missile silos.

NORAD commander Gen. Glen VanHerck said at a conference in August that China “recently demonstrated very advanced hypersonic glide vehicle capabilities” and the demonstration would “provide significant challenges” to NORAD’s ability “to provide threat warning and attack assessment.”

U.S. Air Force secretary Frank Kendall said in September that China was developing an advanced new weapon capable of “global strikes … from space,” and hinted that it was similar to the Soviet Union’s Cold War-era “Fractional Orbital Bombardment System.”

An Asian national security official and Chinese security expert close to China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said the hypersonic weapon was launched on a Long March rocket, typically used for China’s space program. China typically announces such Long March rocket launches, but kept the missile’s launch a secret. It announced the Long March 2C rocket’s 77th launch on July 19, and the 79th launch on August 24, but did announce the 78th launch.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Zhao Lijan denied that the test involved a missile, instead calling it a “spacecraft.”

“This test was a routine spacecraft experiment to verify the reusable technology of spacecraft, which is of great significance for reducing the cost of spacecraft use. It can provide a convenient and cheap way for humans to use space peacefully. Many companies in the world have carried out similar experiments,” Zhao said.

China, Russia and the U.S. have been steadily advancing hypersonic weapon technologies in recent years.

In March 2020, the U.S. successfully tested its common hypersonic glide body (C-HGB), being developed as part of the U.S. efforts to counter other hypersonic weapons. The U.S. hypersonic missile achieved speeds of about Mach 5, about 3,836 miles per hour.

In July, Russia’s Ministry of Defense said it had tested a hypersonic Zircon missile that reached seven times the speed of sound (Mach 7), about 5,370 miles per hour. Russia had previously tested the Zircon on October 2020, during which it reached Mach 8 speeds of 6,138 miles per hour.

GOP Rep. Gallagher on China Testing Hypersonic Missile: ‘This Should Be Our Sputnik Moment

Tuesday on FNC’s “Fox & Friends First,” Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) sounded off on China secretly testing a nuclear-capable low-orbit hypersonic missile in August.

Gallagher emphasized the danger of China having this capability. He said that “this should be our Sputnik moment.”

“It’s a very perverse and dangerous situation,” Gallagher warned.

believe within the decade there is a high likelihood that General Secretary Xi Jinping will make a move on Taiwan, the unification of Taiwan with the mainland is his legacy issue after he pockets the propaganda victory of hosting the Olympics in early 2022,” he added. “We can see things get very, very tense over Taiwan. And if we fall further behind in terms of our strategic or our conventional capabilities, we make it easier for him to do this. And so, we really need a wake-up call. This should be our Sputnik moment, but I hate to say it. Secretary Austin and the Biden administration are trying to cut defense. They’re trying to cut conventional capability. That’s what their budget did for the Navy. That is unacceptable at a time when communist China is growing more aggressive, more bellicose, and out-innovating us. This should be a wake-up call, but instead, we are asleep at the wheel.”

We have to make sure that we deter China on every front, and Taiwan is obviously critical. But most important, we must deter China in a way that does not unbalance our overall strategic position – which faces Russia in Europe and Iran in the Middle East (not to mention Cuba and Venezuela in the Caribbean). To understand our strategic position, it is worth keeping Chinese Grand Strategy in mind. The debate on Chinese grand strategy is difficult because China has successfully hidden its ultimate grand strategic direction and objectives. And so, we are left judging by actions. But actions can also be misleading. Even invasion preparations can be misleading.

In some sense we are always preparing to refight the last war – World War II. By way of analogy, you could say Beijing’s moves against Hong Kong resemble the Anschluss, the loss of Afghanistan is like the Allies abandoning Czechoslovakia, and now we come to Taiwan, a country we feel compelled to defend just as the French and British were compelled to stand by Poland (even though Poland’s strategic position – like Taiwan’s today – was hopeless).

As we draw these parallels, the Chinese are also drawing parallels; but the Chinese draw different lessons from history than we do. In explaining this I am going to refer to Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian’s secret speech before high-level communist officials, delivered roughly twenty years ago. And indeed, in that speech, Chi compares China to Germany in the 1930s.

In the speech Chi says, “today’s China is alarmingly similar to Germany back then. Both of them regard themselves as the most superior races; both of them have a history of being exploited by foreign powers … both of them have the tradition of worshipping their own authorities; both of them feel they have seriously insufficient living space; both of them raise high the two banners of nationalism and socialism … both of them worship ‘one state, one party, one leader, and one doctrine.’”

But here the comparison ends. And it is worthwhile to follow Chi’s quoting of Jaing Zemin as saying: “Germany belongs to pediatrics” – too trivial to be compared with China. “How large is Germany’s population,” asked Chi. Trivial. How big is its territory? Trivial. How many enemies did Germany kill? Trivial compared to the killing of the Beijing regime. How long did Nazi Germany last? Twelve years. Trivial!

Chi says there are three lessons to be learned from the German experience of World War II. The three lessons are: “Firmly grasp the country’s living space; firmly grasp the Party’s control over the nation; and firmly grasp the general direction toward becoming the ‘lord of the earth.’”

First, says Chi, living space is the regime’s central focus, though this cannot be publicly admitted because it would associate China with Nazi Germany in the eyes of the world and reinforce the view that China is a threat. So, this focus must remain secret.

Second, the Communist Party must teach the Chinese people to “go out” and find “new lands” in order to justify its leadership position and hold firmly to power. Chi states, “Comrade Mao Zedong said that if we could lead the Chinese people outside of China, resolving the lack of living space in China, the Chinese people will support us.”

Third, for China to become the “lord of the earth,” it is necessary, said Chi, “to hold firmly onto the big ‘issue of America.’ This appears to be shocking, but the logic is actually very simple.”

Chi underscores his point with the following rhetorical question: “Would the United States allow us to go out to gain new living space? First, if the United States is firm in blocking us, it is hard for us to do anything significant to Taiwan, Vietnam, India, or even Japan, [so] how much more living space can we get? Very trivial! Only countries like the United States, Canada and Australia have the vast land to serve our need for mass colonization.”

“Therefore,” noted General Chi, “solving the ‘issue of America’ is the key to solving all other issues. First, this makes it possible for us to have many people migrate there and even establish another China under the leadership of the CCP.”

In this strategic context, China is understandably secretive about its goals. Chi stated, “We also must never forget what Comrade [Deng] Xiaoping emphasized: ‘Refrain from revealing ambitions and put others off the track.’ The hidden message is: we must put up with America; we must conceal our ultimate goals, hide our capabilities, and await the opportunity.”

He then discussed launching a biological war against the United States in the future. He called this “using special means to ‘clean up’ America…” The last problem, said General Chi, is “firmly seizing the preparations for military battle.” And he then mentioned Taiwan: “Our military battle preparation appears to aim at Taiwan but in fact is aimed at the United States, and the preparation is far beyond the scope of attacking aircraft carriers or satellites.”

What I conclude from this is that China’s threat to Taiwan craves this larger strategic context. Furthermore, the testimony of the GRU defector, Colonel Stanislav Lunev must not be ignored. Lunev, who spoke fluent Mandarin and worked in China, knew of a secret post-Soviet military agreement with China about a future war against the United States in which Russia would acquire Alaska and China would acquire the lower 48 states. Thus, we must not take our eyes off the ball. America is China’s main target. Taiwan may be a stepping stone, or a diversion. Therefore, our preparations must include a strengthening here in North America – the bolstering of strategic defenses and our strategic deterrent.

It is my thesis that China has a grand strategy and we have failed to see what it is. China is a collective party dictatorship run by committees and party think tanks that have been working out the country’s grand strategy for decades. Our blindness to grand strategy, and our denial of a grand strategy is, itself, essential to the success of Chinese grand strategy.

More than two years ago The National Interest published an article titled “China’s Big Mistake: It Thinks It Can Beat America in a War” – the article argues that China mistakenly assumes it can “launch an attack on China’s neighbors without first knocking out U.S. forces.” The people who wrote the article are taking Chinese statements, designed for their consumption, at face value. They are not only being deceived, but they are broadcasting their stupidity to everyone who reads their publication. – The National Interest, China’s Big Mistake: It Thinks It Can Beat America In a War | The National Interest

As reported in The U.S. Sun, Chinese military expert Du Wenlong warned that the U.S. could not stop a successful Chinese invasion of Taiwan and Japan would be nuked if it attempted to interfere. On a Chinese video channel, “allegedly approved by the Chinese Communist Party” and tied to the People’s Liberation Army, the narrator of a video (now deleted) said, “We will use nuclear bombs first. We will use nuclear bombs continuously. We will do this until Japan declares unconditional surrender for the second time. We will liberate Taiwan, if Japan dares to intervene by force – even if it only deploys one soldier, one plane or one ship – we will not only return fire but also wage full-scale war against Japan itself.” The Japanese were not intimidated. Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso said Japan would defend Taiwan in alliance with the USA.[ii] – WW3 fears as China boasts US would have ‘no chance’ stopping invasion of Taiwan (the-sun.com)

Ironically one of the things working against China here is that in many ways, given China's ascendance, Japan increasingly has much less to lose. I say this in light of their horrible demographic and economic situation, anyway. Who would want to live in a world dominated by neighbor China for the next 100 years? Feeble and even more scared, always under threat? Nope.

The thought that you can "colonize" a super power that is thousands of miles away, spread about by the most vast ocean, is delusional. I guess that's why John says GD crises result in such weird, violent interactions, in the end.

The Chinese attack is going to be on America not Taiwan.

The Chinese know no matter who they attack they will end up fighting the U.S. in the end, this was one of the points made in General Chi Haotian's speech.

Its a genius plan. The entire world is expecting a Chinese attack on Taiwan when it will probably be a nuclear missile salvo at America.
Let’s presume that back then Germany and Japan had been able to keep the United States neutral and had fought a protracted war step by step on the Soviet front. If they had adopted this approach, gained some time to advance their research, eventually succeeded in obtaining the technology of nuclear weapons and missiles, and launched surprise attacks against the United States and the Soviet Union using them, then the United States and the Soviet Union would not have been able to defend themselves and would have had to surrender. Little Japan, in particular, made an egregious mistake in launching the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. This attack did not hit the vital parts of the United States. Instead, it dragged the United States into the war, into the ranks of the gravediggers that eventually buried the German and Japanese fascists.

China launches suspected anti-satellite weapon into space

China has launched a new satellite that analysts say can be used as a weapon capable of grabbing and crushing American satellites.

The Shijian-21 satellite was sent aloft on Sunday atop a rocket booster from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, ostensibly for cleaning “space debris,” according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, Beijing’s state-run space company. The company stated that the satellite is “tasked with demonstrating technologies to alleviate and neutralize space debris.”

The robotic satellite launch followed a suspected recent test of a new hypersonic missile that Chinese officials said was a peaceful space experiment.

The commander of the U.S. Space Command, Air Force Gen. James Dickinson told Congress in April that spacecraft like the Shijian-21 is part of an effort by China to seek “space superiority through space and space-attack systems.”

“One notable object is the Shijian-17, a Chinese satellite with a robotic arm,” Gen. Dickinson said. “Space-based robotic arm technology could be used in a future system for grappling other satellites.”

The Shijian-17 satellite is used for communications and monitoring space debris. It is said to be capable of maneuvering close to orbiting satellites and grabbing or crushing the spacecraft.

Gen. Dickinson said the co-orbital robotic spacecraft is part of a growing arsenal of space weaponry fielded by the Chinese military.

The Shijian series of satellites were first observed in 2013 when three were launched and U.S. intelligence detected unusual movements by the crafts. The Shiyan-7, or (Experiment-7), Chuangxin-3 (Innovation-3) and Shijian-15 (Practice-15) satellites each weighed around 22 pounds or less.

Of the three spacecraft, the Shijian-15 was the most unusual, according to U.S. officials. The satellite carried a robotic arm with a pincher on the end.

Other Chinese space weapons include several types of ground-launched anti-satellite missiles capable of hitting satellites in low-, medium- and high-altitude orbits, and electronic jammers and lasers.

“We see their capabilities from direct-ascent ASAT, antisatellite capabilities, to on-orbit activity that they’ve done with that capability,” he said.

China’s space weapons build-up also is couched in deception, the general said. “All the while, China continues to maintain their public stance against the weaponization of space,” Gen. Dickinson said.

China has used civilian space development, like debris mitigation, as cover for testing co-orbital anti-satellite weaponry.

Michael J. Listner, a space security analyst, said identifying China’s capabilities is difficult because of the dual-use nature of space technology.

“Technology that has peaceful uses can be used for nonpeaceful uses,” he said.

Efforts during the 1960s and 1970s to ban ASAT systems were stymied by difficulties in verifying space technology. The development of missile defenses also compounded the verification problem.

In 2008, the U.S. military in what was code-named Operation Burnt Frost, used a modified anti-missile interceptor to shoot down a falling U.S. satellite.

The latest effort at co-orbital ASAT development through the Shijian-21 highlights the issue.

“A mission that could have a peaceful use in orbital debris mitigation could be employed as a co-orbital ASAT,” said Mr. Listner, with the firm Space Law and Policy Solutions.

China “says ‘trust us,’ but the classified nature of the mission and the PRC’s development of counter-space capabilities says otherwise.”

Retired Indian Col. Vinayak Bhat, a former imagery intelligence analyst, said the launch of Shijian-21 is suspicious because China has previously shown no interest in reducing space debris and has been launching larger rockets and increasing debris, he said.

“This robotic arm technology is inherently dual use and would most certainly be used as a space weapon to capture and disable/destroy enemy satellites,” Col. Bhat said. “China deploying such dual-use satellites strongly suggests [the Chinese Communist Party’s] intention to militarize space.”

A Defense Intelligence Agency report concluded that China’s military sees space warfare as a means of deterring and countering U.S. military intervention in a regional conflict.

“[People’s Liberation Army] analysis of U.S. and allied military operations states that ‘destroying or capturing satellites and other sensors’ would make it difficult to use precision-guided weapons,” the report said. “Moreover, PLA writings suggest that reconnaissance, communications, navigation and early warning satellites could be among the targets of attacks designed to ‘blind and deafen the enemy.’”

Chinese state media provide no additional details on the Shijian-21 launch.

The state-run China Daily stated small objects traveling at high speeds in space can deliver as much energy as a hand grenade. More than 100 million pieces of space debris are estimated to be in orbit ranging in size from several inches to floating garbage weighing several tons.

Around 50% of the space debris was the result of disintegrated spacecraft, said Liu Jing, deputy director of China’s Space Debris Monitoring and Application Center. Ms. Liu made no mention in the China Daily report of China’s 2007 ASAT missile test that left tens of thousands of dangerous floating debris in space.

Since the 2007 test and the world outcry against the test, China has not conducted similar ASAT missile tests, but instead has hidden its space warfare attack capabilities by disguising them as anti-missile tests or civilian research.
