The effort to develop intelligent weapons systems, capable of
operating autonomously and making decisions on their own of which
people to kill, is becoming increasingly important in many countries
today.
The Singularity is not a point in time when suddenly all the computers
in the world are smarter than humans. It's a point in time that
begins a years-long process where super-intelligent computers become
more and more common, and take over roles previously held by humans,
and do them better and more intelligently than humans. At some point,
say 10-30 years after the Singularity, the computers may decide on
their own to take over, but that won't happen for a while.
So the most likely scenario is that WW III will be fought by humans,
but with a big chunk of the fighting being fought by autonomous
intelligent weapons.
What could possibly go wrong?
And it's worth mentioning that the people at Google seem perfectly
happy doing AI research in China, to help the Chinese government
develop weapons systems that will be used to kill us and people in
other countries around the world, but they consider themselves too
morally superior to help our own government defend us.
When China and the US go to war, I wonder which side Google will
be on?
