Toward the end the Romans debased their money too. They kept putting less and less silver in the coins. The Romans had a kind of slow motion hyperinflation. Even though in the long run debasing the money destroys the money, it is the only way the government can keep spending twice what it gets in taxes this week. So it kicks the can down the road another week. As John's can kicking theory says, when a politician is given a choice between taking some harsh action to solve a problem or doing something that kicks the can down the road a bit, always expect them to kick the can down the road. They will keep printing money. With people like Krugmann with his Nobel prize running propaganda point, most people even think it is a good thing to print money.
