51/49 is the gender ratio at birth. But it's a safe bet that men have always been in more dangerous occupations, whether that was hunter or sailor or soldier. So I doubt there's a time before the mid 20th century when the gender ratio of 20 year olds has been equal. And the gender ratio of 25 y/o would probably be even worse. If that's true, it's not surprising that feminism never really caught on before the 60s.

I agree with you, but the gender ratio isn't equal -- "nature"
produces more boys than girls -- about 51% to 49% -- in "normal"
situations.

China really has to be considered exceptional, with something like 1.3
males to each female. On the one hand, a guy can't get a date unless
he has a lot of money and owns real estate, but on the other hand,
prostitution is high since it's the easiest way to make money.

If you were looking for a mechanism that makes women's issues more important in a generational awakening, it might just be that a generation born after a war has a roughly equal gender ratio, giving women more choice in mates and more power in relationships. That power soon extends beyond the dating scene, as men tout the "women's issues" line in order to be relatively more attractive.

If that relationship is valid, we should expect some serious women's lib coming out of China very soon, as its skewed gender ratio gives women the upper hand.
