During the Civil War southern General Nathan Forrest disengaged from a substantial Union engagement at Oxford, MS, and by stealth of night he moved roughly 100 miles by hard movement to, and attacked the Union "strong-hold" at Memphis, TN - a target thought to be "secure", and impervious to attack. The attempt was to capture the three Union General Officers known to be living in Memphis. The action stunned all in the Union Army, it caused a Union retreat from central MS, and changed the course of events in the Central Mississippi campaign. No longer did any Union General ever feel safe anywhere for the remainder of the Civil War.
The Ukraine needs to take a light mechanized unit - no more than 20 - 50 men and disengage from Donetsk, and under cover of night, drive the roughly 100 miles to, and attack Stalingrad (Volograd). The move will stun Putin and the Russians. Or alternatively there is a Russian military airfield roughly 12 miles due east of Stalingrad. Fly the 100 miles to that field at 100' altitude or less to avoid Russian air defense, or perhaps approach from the Caspian, land two transport aircraft containing two each light armored vehicles. Destroy the Russian aircraft on the ground then drive the 12 miles to Volograd and wreak some havoic for 20 - 30 minutes then return to the transports and return to the Ukraine. The cost to Russia, and Putin specifically will be high indeed.
If not this then something else. The Ukraine needs to do something to stop being seen by the Russians as a Russian "punching bag." With the Russian invasion of the Ukraine all limits are removed. The Russian/Georgia conflict showed what happens when someone just stands there and lets Putin pummel them. Better to die on your feet, rather than live on your knees.
