I feel that anything we do will not be advantageous to us. It worsens if we do something, or if we don't.

I'm not aware of that being a common idea where I am currently located, the people in Syria and western Iraq may feel differently. OTOH, I'm working 14 hour days, so I don't get out a lot.

The Sunnis in west Iraq begged for us to stay, they knew where this would go, very quickly. They really encouraged us to just overthrow Baghdad and set up our own controls. Of course, we didn't do that and I don't think you'd have gotten any US support for such a move. This mess was inevitable from the moment the 2007 SOFA agreement was signed. Maliki was always an ass, he nearly got his head handed to him by one of Bush's aides for pretending to sign a document at a signing ceremony. He never wanted to make any decision, he wanted someone else to do it for him, and when we started leaving, he turned to Iran.

The reason that I quoted this woman is because, according to Memri,
what she said represents a widespread point of view in the Mideast.
Whether what she says is crap or not is actually irrelevant, if it's
what a lot of people believe, or say they believe.

I was there, I followed every bit of the negotiations as carefully as you would expect, given they were talking about my job, and Maliki (tool of Iran that he was and still is) INSISTED the Americans leave. We offered to leave 40,000, then 30,000, then 20,000 - no number able to defend itself was small enough, Iran wanted us out so Maliki wanted us out.

Frankly, it got to the point I was almost ashamed that the US government kept trying. It was patently obvious that Maliki was acting as a mouthpiece for Iran, there was a certain Iranian general who'd make visits to Baghdad and in a few days after he visited, the demands would change again.
