Re: Top 3 Favorite Indexes

I don't know how I never found your Dow page before, John. Great stuff. The Dow will eventually tell the full story, for sure. My view is that both the Dow and the S&P are so mainstream that they are being artificially supported by the Treasury/Fed through futures purchasing and will both be ...

Top 3 Favorite Indexes

As we're mostly of a like mind that this is a once in a lifetime economic maelstrom, I'm wondering what our best and brightest use as economic indicators. I'm sure most of us scan the standard fare up and down the right side of Bloomberg, but I'm wondering what the "off the beaten track" indicators ...

Re: Financial topics

Is anybody as amused about P/E ratios as am I? If you don't break out into a belly laugh about how expensive stocks are right now, try to hold back a guffaw when you see the "estimates" of where they will be in 12 months:

Re: Financial topics

Disclaimer: I have skimmed over some of the recent Gordo/credit card stuff but haven't read every post. Just wanted to offer my own experiences:

I don't actively seek credit cards and sources of credit, but in the past we have done very well with the offers that just magically appeared in our ...

Re: Inflation, deflation, gold and currencies

I have no idea about the long time prospects for Gold, but I'm sure the dollar will get crushed this week and Oil will hold up over $100/barrel if not rise significantly. I was double short the Nasdaq 100 for several months until last Monday and Tuesday at which time I transitioned into foreign ...

Re: System Dynamics and Macroeconomics

"In other words, those models assume that a 1960s
40-year-old, who lived through the Great Depression, has the same
attitudes and behaviors toward money as a Generation-X 40-year-old
today. That assumption is utterly insane, and yet it permeates
mainstream macroeconomics."

I agree. I think the ...

Re: CRA - > Clinton CRA -> Credit Lock

BTW, In case some of you don't read the entire NYT article from THREE YEARS AGO, here's my favorite quote:

''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial ...

CRA - > Clinton CRA -> Credit Lock

OK, I'll go first in the politics forum.

Disclaimer: What I'm about to relate below comes from my very *limited* and very recent research, so I'm sure I have some things wrong.

I'm sure I'm missing key regulation/deregulation events, but here's what I *think* I know:

1977 - CRA (Community ...

Re: Financial topics

Thanks again John for starting this forum. My guess is that you have lots of "closet" devotees who will now appear and contribute to the collective good. I was wondering if maybe you could put some forum at the very top level about managing assets/investments in these once-a-century times so that ...

Re: Welcome to the Generational Dynamics Forum!

401KObsessive: Had to laugh. Also an engineer. Every time I open up the rear of our car I laugh at the big pillowy pair of XL size purple ski gloves that I leave there year round. They're there because I don't want my wife or myself to be there without gloves in case the car breaks down or a tire ...
