Obama's Lost Opportunities
Obama could have become a great president. He had the opportunity, taking office in the immediate aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, with a Democrat controlled congress.
He could have gone after the banks, rating agencies, and the overleverage and bond practices that created the mess. Instead, he opted for the Dodd-Frank (two political crooks btw) reforms that did little other than kicking the can down the road, and the Stimulus package for "shovel ready" projects that sent the national debt on an even more vertical trajectory than the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. No one was held accountable for the financial breakdown of 2008. The real issues were never addressed, and now we have the "everything" bubble as a result.
He could have fixed the medical insurance mess in the US. Instead he made it even worse. He literally let the medical insurance industry write up the "ObamaCare" laws. Then everyone found themselves paying even more for medical insurance and medical care. The whole thing degenerated into a pork windfall for the contractors involved.
He could have dealt with the Russia/Ukraine mess in 2014. Instead he incompetently intervened in Ukraine, and then let the Russians do what they wanted. Creating much of the mess that resulted in the current war (the rest of the blame is mostly on Clinton). His videotaped conversation with Putin's crony Medvedev where he says he will have more flexibility to give the Russians what they want is a great example of his failure to understand what he was doing on the world stage.
IMHO, his true "personal" objective was to re-ignite race conflict within the United States. He was pretty successful at doing that.
The end result is a legacy of huge missed opportunities, and the creation of internal strife that never should have happened. A complete failure.

I'm not as hostile to Obama as you are, but it's hard not to think of his foreign policy as anything but a disaster. I haven't forgotten the way he mocked Romney for calling Russia a threat: "The 1980s called; they want their foreign policy back." He scrapped the missile shield and did nothing about Putin moving into Crimea. Putin played Obama like a fiddle, seeing him as a weak man.
His victory was a historic moment, given we had a black President less than 45 years after the Civil Rights Movement. One that won a greater percentage of white voters than Kerry or Gore did. The press fell in love with him, becoming little more than his propaganda outlet. The overwhelming attitude was that anyone who criticized him was a racist.
I don't think it was Obama's goal to spark racial division, but he looked the other way when others did so on his behalf. The number of people who considered race relations good or improving kept going up for decades, peaking in his first term. Then Black Lives Matter was founded and that number plummeted. I live in an area that voted Trump by a 2-1 margin, but I see inter-racial couples every day at my job. It's not as if the racism allegation wasn't used before, but it hit a fever pitch during Obama's Presidency.
He might be considered an excellent President now, but his term ended less than 8 years ago, so the press' love affair is still fresh. Given what's happened since, I doubt that's going to last. He gave Iran over 100 billion, which they used in their proxy wars, and did nothing to support the pro-Democracy protests.

I don't think any critical thinkers would consider his presidency a success. I literally can't think of one significant positive action that he accomplished. Someone please correct me if they know of one / some.

America's "Warlord" on why the US military isn't up for a fight currently and why they need to end their 'dumb' war in Russia/Ukraine so that we're up for the real fight against the Commies.

https://gcaptain.com/u-s-coast-guard-so ... rt-cranes/The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a new cybersecurity directive targeting Chinese-manufactured ship-to-shore cranes, addressing mounting concerns over national security vulnerabilities in America’s maritime infrastructure.
MARSEC Directive 105-5 establishes additional cyber risk management requirements for ship-to-shore cranes made by Chinese companies, building upon previous security measures implemented in February 2024.
“The built-in vulnerabilities for remote access and control of these STS cranes, combined with intelligence regarding China’s interest in disrupting U.S. critical infrastructure, necessitate immediate action,” the directive effectively states

Morgan Adamski, executive director of U.S. Cyber Command, said Chinese-linked cyber operations are aimed at gaining an advantage in case of a major conflict with the U.S.
Final steps are being taken on all fronts before the horrible things happen. Russia is being prodded into being the first to use nukes in this first 21st century war. Maybe the ME will pull off a surprise and beat them to it for the holidays. But everyone knows that the real show is in the Pacific.

https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/news ... g-anywhereWould Obama fracture the military to once again cripple Trump’s term in office? The former president is in a decidedly weaker position and facing a battle-hardened Trump. Still, it would be reckless to assume the best from the man who already proved his willingness to weaponize the national security apparatus against his political opponent. The president-elect shouldn’t take any chances.
Obama's nothing but reckless endangerment to the Republic. A healthy discord is needed but his ilk aren't healthy anymore.

Are you all still maintaining the same predictions?
By the way, what does John (or anyone else) think of this Peter Turchin guy? I saw that David Lin had him on a recent podcast. Some of his ideas make sense (elite overproduction) but it's funny that he's part of the University system that basically just captured all this money, and he talks about it as a member.

David Lin had a good interview with Howe about the current crisis. I'll try to watch this new Turchin talk.Cool Breeze wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 11:08 amAre you all still maintaining the same predictions?
