I don't think WHO has a category 4, but you're absolutely right about
the seriousness of this situation. I've been trying to think about
how this situation could end in any way that isn't the biggest
disaster since WW II, and I can't. Ebola will infect everyone in
Liberia and Sierra Leone at least, and it's only a matter of time
before it spreads to other underdeveloped countries, particularly
where there are megacities packed with slums. I've been wondering
what was going to end up being the trigger for the next world war, and
Ebola might be it. And once the world is at war, then Ebola won't be
stopped anywhere, because the global health infrastructure will be
destroyed.

I've previously estimated that the next world war would kill some 3
billion of the world's 7 billion people -- from war, famine and
disease -- and Ebola may turn that into an underestimate. You may
have to revise your science fiction story.

I still think is misunderstood how Ebola is spread, and still think the mosquito has a part in it. Hope I am wrong , but I think not. For if it is true that the mosquito can spread Ebola as in the above mentioned diseases, there could/would be greater panic in the population. --- Not good

One other thing that's hampering efforts to treat Ebola is just that even professional healthcare workers are terrified to get anywhere near it. Even people who have spent their lives working with the most dangerous microbes imaginable are afraid to treat Ebola's victims.

A proposal I've heard, and one I think Liberia and Sierra Leone will do at some point, is to have the army seal off the areas where people have been infected and shoot anyone who tries to escape. That might have some effect in slowing its spread, but I don't know.

As for the refugee problem, especially in Syria, those numbers are out of date. I have no doubt that something like half the Syrian population are homeless, either fleeing the country or displaced within it; become a brutal awakening era.

Ebola: I also believe that it is spread much easier than is being reported.

I agree, it's time for a Cordon sanitaire. However, instead of blocking off a city district, we should blockade entire countries and let the disease run its course. The native African population is ignorant. Their behavior has made the efforts to stop the spread of Ebola useless. Seal the borders, save Europe, America, and Asia. I think India will be next. The Indians are the business elite of Africa, and they travel back and forth constantly. Once Ebola arrives in filthy India, it's over.

As regards to Syria: could've, should've, would've. A better question: What now?

Gerald, we can only hope that you are wrong. But the virus is vigorous, and can live at ambient for appreciable periods. But the possibility probably hasn't been clinically examined, my guess would be because of the jeopardy, but I am certainly not in any position to know... I don't know if anyone does. But you are certainly correct regarding the other items spread by mosquitoes.
