The difference is that the Afghanistan war was an unraveling era war for russia, while the Ukraine war is a crisis er a war. A population and an army have different behaviors during these two different years.

Israel and Gaza appear to be on the verge of a new war, tensions continue to rise over taiwan, while Europe is burning down with wildfires across the continent, and Africa is in starvation thanks to massive droughts. all that on addition to the Ukraine war. nonetheless, the midterms are 2 months off, and now Trump is explosively in the news. so there's very little room in the news coverage in the America in America for anything but the midterms. however the other issues are being covered overseas.

economic data out of China is extremely bad, in multiple sectors, including retail, consumer, real estate, this morning.

analyst s are increasingly attributing China's economic failures to xi jinplnng disastrous covid zero policy, which causes authorities to shut dowanentire city or apartment block if there is even one case of covid detected. the result of this policy is that China has been playing whack-a-mole with covid as it shuts down one place,, and so forth.

there's an amusing story coming out of a in Ikea store in Shanghai. the store was crowded, and apparently a rumor started spreading that a covid case was detected. according to the report, the people in the store started screaming and running for the doors, in order to get out before the storms locked down.


central banks around the world are raising interest rates to fight inflation, but this morning People's Bank of China pboc surprise everyone by cutting interest rates by a small amount. this is obviously not enough China's economic problems, and more must be done, especially with the covid zero policy. however xi ping has met his reputation on covid 0 policy, and it's failure could mean the end of his dictatorship, unless he deflects the problem by invading taiwan.

this analysis is based on discussions on CNBC and Bloomberg tv.

The August empire State factory index fell the most in history.

What's your feeling on the China situation and when it flare up into a big problem? It seems to be almost there.

No date was requested. I think Higg explained sometime ago that the more certain an event occuring, the less certain of the timing of it. Current events would have seemed quite far fetched only a few years ago and yet we "knew" it would happen. And now we're watching it but putting it into place as far it's relative time to climax is more of a feeling. Some people haven't a clue and think everything is fine with only some of the usual problems of the world. Others think we are on the precipice of a disaster of historical proportions. We check in with other people to get their perspective. John always has a good perspective on this matter.
