A brief description of the Nord Stream breaks…

At approximately 2 a.m. GMT and 5 p.m. GMT on Monday, a seismograph on the Danish island of Bornholm, near where the leaks occurred, recorded spikes. Currently, upwards of 5.2 million cubic feet of natural gas is spewing into the Baltic Sea and, and according to The Guardian, creating a kilometer-wide area of bubbling gas.

The steel pipe of the Nordic Stream has a wall of 1.6 inches and is coated with steel-reinforced concrete up to 4.3 inches thick. Each section of the pipe weighs 11 tons, which goes to 24-25 tons after the concrete is applied. Sections of the pipelines are between 260-ft to 360-ft deep.

If the leaks began with an explosion picked up at Bornholm, and that explosion was large enough to pierce such a pipe, that doesn’t sound a lot like an accident. Assuming something was the source of such an explosion, I would like to know how precisely it was placed. I am assuming it was very precisely placed, which would imply submarine. It could be a larger device dropped by a surface ship. (It might be interesting to review satellite pictures capturing ship traffic.) If it was not such a device, you would have to get a lot of oxidizer in place to create the explosion, likely through the pipe, which could only be done by Russia, and would be hard to isolate to a few locations. Seems less likely.

Just why I was guessing precise targeting and submergible, but more information about the breaks are needed to more than guess.

The blasts are estimated at being an equivalent of 100 kg of TNT while the pipelines are 70-90 meters deep. Definitely not for amateur divers, but not impossible for professionals. The locations are very well mapped so that wouldn't be hard to find.

Russian social media is flooded with nightmare images and posts from newly drafted Russian soldiers saying things like the "months of training" mentioned by Putin in reality is only one day of training and then it is off to the front. New draftees are being told to bring their own sleeping bags with them as none are available in Ukraine. Also, many recruits are being issued WW2 rifles and helmets, if they even get helmets. It's 1916 all over again.

In February Russian prisoners of war were wearing Walmart hunting jackets of woodland camo with reversible safety orange lining. And that was at the beginning of the war.

Russia has no choice now but to use nuclear weapons if they want to avoid losing the Crimea.

The following is my personal opinion and conclusion. After listening to
innumerable analysts and pundits, I've concluded that neither Russia nor
America has anything to gain from the pipeline sabotage. I think the most
likely saboteurs were environmental terrorists, possibly funded by Iran or
North Korea.

North Korea has no dog in this fight since it concentrates on South Korea, Japan and the US. It has no real interest in Europe and vice versa. Iran is still hoping for some kind of nuclear deal and European nations really want one too. Antagonizing them means deal hopes end immediately.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that Russia is the most likely culprit. NS2 never went into operation while Putin shut down deliveries on NS1 a couple weeks ago. Neither were generating any revenue. The sabotage also happened on the same day the Baltic Pipe sending Norwegian gas to Poland opened. Coincidence? Probably not.

Hey, nice pipeline you got there. Be a shame if something happened to it...
