“May you live in interesting times" is an English expression purporting to be a translation of a traditional Chinese curse. I get up everyday (I'm 59) and bust my balls farming 1,100 acre with one part time hand. Most days are 14-18 hours. (not complaining, love the work). However...the Fucking USDA control all the prices we receive because of Goldman and the like manipulating Commodity Prices. All the lying sack of shit USDA Unicorn Reports keeping grains in check so the EBT folks can have cheap food. I go in every night with my asshole fucked raw by a bunch of paper pushers. and yes, I do actually produce something useable. I'm fucking sick of it.....this spring will drop $ 750,000K in the ground waiting to see if Goldman and UDSA will let me eek out a profit. We're all enslaved by the USDA....might as well be on a Chinese Collective Farm.

Maybe the fall in oil prices will lower operating costs enough to make things better.

That depends upon other input costs and especially commodity prices. For example #2 corn in 2012 at it's high was around $8 per bushel. Today #2 corn is around $4 per bushel. #2 corn is the base for such things as -- animal feed, human food, corn oil, corn syrup, ethanol, plastics, medications, etc. http://commodityhq.com/2012/13-ways-cor ... day-lives/ -- Today for a farmer to be successful ( generally speaking and having good land, water and climate ) requires a high level of sophistication, economy of scale and preferably NO debt.

For some perspective lets use the above farmer -- we don't know what he is growing or where -- but for a comparison exercise ---

$750,000 input /1,100 acres --( a decent size farm ) = $681 input cost per acre, assuming he is not counting real estate taxes and equipment costs. Lets compare this to an Iowa corn farm.

In Iowa, on a quality farm, input costs are around $480 per acre. Lets assume 180 bushels per acre harvest ( a good return for this above average year ) #2 corn at $4 per bushel = $720 less $480 input costs = $240 per acre, again not counting real estate taxes and equipment costs. Quality land is selling for around $12,000 + per acre. So not counting taxes and equipment costs and assuming his time is worth nothing this hypothetical Iowa farmer is getting around a 2% return. In spite of all of the risks with weather, pests etc.

The $480 amount is a number I chose from the $450 to $500 per acre input average that was given to me from a farm management company in North Central Iowa for the 2014 crop year.

We have seen this cycle before also when the fields do not breath they are ovecome with
