They did not have computers back then. So no Internet, no Facebook, no "dynamic hedging", no "program trading", no "stop loss orders" (I think). News travels faster, public understanding can change far faster, and computers are automatically doing all kinds of trading. I believe the amount of leveraging and derivatives is far greater now than back then. All of these things can make it so that "selling begets selling" and we get a positive feedback loop, death spiral, or sudden crash.

Back then US paper money was 40% backed by gold. Many people still had real physical gold and silver coins. The foundation for the value of money was far more solid than it is today. Today the value of the Yen or Dollar could go down by a factor of two and probably there is nothing the central banks or anyone else could do to stop it.

I think things will happen far faster now than they did back then. A crash that took 4 years back then could well happen in a month or two today.

If I am right and the increasing interest rates bring up the velocity of money, causing inflation to suddenly pick up, then the market will crash really fast. This is because people currently believe in the "Bernanke Put" or "Yellen Put" and the silly faith in the omnipotent power of the Fed will be shattered if there is surprising inflation.

Anyway, this is why I expect a very rapid and large crash.
