Because I have a minor child, I can start my Social Security at age 62 and my child will get 50 percent of my full retirement age (FRA) Social Security when I turn 62, provided I start my benefit on my own initiative (Social Security will not send you a letter informing you of this until you apply for your benefit and get approved). If someone takes Social Security at 62, their benefit is typically reduced by 30 percent from the FRA benefit. That still applies if someone has a minor child. Therefore, at age 62, someone with a minor child will receive 70 percent plus 50 percent for the minor child under the retiree's record for a total of 120 percent of the FRA benefit.

To get this benefit, I couldn't apply online for my child and they didn't want me to go into the office. I made 2 calls to Social Security starting in August. The first was to start the process, which I had read had to be done by phone. I found out that was not entirely true. The best way to start the process was for me to apply online for my benefit. Once that was approved, Social Security mailed a letter saying I was eligible to collect for my child based on my record. Next, I had to call Social Security to schedule a telephone appointment to apply for my child. A Social Security employee called me at the appointed day and time (which was yesterday) and took the application over the phone. Before the call was over, the employee told me that the benefit had been approved. He also told me it is a long term benefit that will be ongoing for the next 14 years until she turns 18 or graduates from high school.

My intention is to stay at the low class schmuck level. But I guess it's good to know that I might have the requisite skills to waddle up to the window for a bailout if the situation calls for it.

Also, there are financial firms out there who will tell you the money (for the child) has to go into a special kind of account to avoid this or that. They offer to set up the "needed" account (within their umbrella of financial services, of course) and take someone through the process. It's not true that any special account is necessary.

Why do people tend to think engineers are smart?

In my experience, most engineers are smarter than most physicians. But people tend to think that physicians are smart, and compared to the average person, they are. Most people who aren’t particularly smart don’t know any smart people apart from their own physician.

For example you have to master calculus to master physics, which most engineers have to do. Medical students do not.

But there are eight cognitive functions and we don’t live long enough to develop more than half of them. People tend to overlook those they haven’t developed and overvalue those they have, a phenomenon known as false ego. This complicates reliably discerning who really is smart.

I've heard and read a lot of opinions like this over the years and will comment on this topic, as what I have to say about it is off the beaten track.

A physician friend of mine once said that he had a lot of respect for chemical engineers because they take calculus and p-chem whereas physicians don't have to. I didn't have much to say about that at the time because I hadn't given it much thought. Mostly I thought he was being polite.

Before discussing that, though, let's start with something else. Where could someone find a list of people who were by some definition outliers based on a supposed measurement of intelligence at a specific, preferably early, age? There is something like that. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has a database that contains the name, date of graduation and high school attended for every National Merit Scholarship Finalist. Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos are listed in it, same as anyone else. Briefly, a National Merit Scholarship Finalist is someone who scored in the top half of one percent on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test administered to high school juniors all around the country, then had this score confirmed when taking the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Debating the merits of the test is not as interesting to me as looking at the results; in other words, what these people ended up doing with their lives. Are there a lot of engineers in this database? A lot of physicians? A few years ago, I looked through it enough to get a general idea. The breakdown goes about like this, with about one-fifth in each of these categories:
1. Doctors and lawyers.
2. Business owners.
3. Ordinary workers.
4. People who have dropped off the face of the earth without a trace.
5. Everybody else. This would include a few engineers who work for corporations or in consulting, but they are a small part of this approximately 20 percent.

Next I will discuss the calculus, physics and p-chem aspect.
