Many power stations and iron ore processing plants are dependent on the very high energy coal, anthracite, that lies under Easter Ukraine. Over the past 150 years major interdependent businesses grew up, I have seen an estimate of 70,000 people employed in the related industries in Ukraine, excluding Donbas, the other side in the civil war.
Up till the end of 2016 large amounts of coal passed through the internal border, enriching many oligarchs. Unfortunately for them the right wing nationalists did not think this was in line with their plan of wiping out the Russian speaking population in Donbas. Maybe they just didn't get a big enough cut. So since then they tightened up the border leading to a complete shutdown. This has led to a crisis in electricity supply and serious risk of an employment and foreign earnings (billions of dollars) catastrophe.
This situation is making it clear that the writ of the Government in Kiev is limited. They cannot open the borders using the Ukrainian Army, which is actually in position to do so, because it would split the Government and probably initiate another, different, civil war.
The crazier side of this is that the self same coal is still being extracted, sold and shipped to Russia and then resold and shipped to Ukraine with a different set of oligarchs making money whilst the coal travels hundreds of extra miles.

Ukraine has been selling hardware to the Saudi Arabian Wahabbists, and they have received a tanker (200,00 tonnes) of aviation fuel in return.
