Age is definitely the issue. I still get calls from recruiters, since
my resume is online. Here's a conversation that I had a couple of
weeks ago:
Recruiter: "I'm finding someone for a client, and your resume is great
and exactly what they're looking for!"
Me: "Well, I'm an older person, and nobody is hiring any over age 40
or 50, so it's probably a waste of time trying."
Recruiter: "Oh, well thank you for being so honest. Now YOU all have
a very good weekend!"
Me: Click.
The above is the complete conversation. I have the same conversation,
or a slight variation, every week or so. One other conversation ended
with, "Ooohhhhhh. Do you know anyone younger with the same
experiences?" "Click."
And the situation is clearly getting worse. A year ago, I would say
"over age 60," and I'd sometimes get pushback, such as, "this company
isn't like that," or "we don't discriminate" or "for a consulting
position it shouldn't matter."
But now there's no longer any pushback at all, even for the lower age.
Here's another phenomenon that you may have noticed. You may have
noticed that you, Aeden and I are the only ones posting anything. We
used to get lots of people posting, but now there's no one.
Does that mean that the forum is being deserted? It might. But I
keep track of the number of visitors, and that number hasn't changed
-- about 40-50 guests at any given time. So there are still a lot of
people reading the forum, but not posting anything. Also, the volume
of clicks on my e-mailings is the same as ever.
In Washington, the anti-Trump hysteria has been constant for two
years, but the Mueller report was a major humiliation to the media and
politicians, since they had bet their lives that Mueller had found
something. So now they're massive sufferers of cognitive dissonance,
and have gone completely crazy. And AOC is running the Democratic
Party.
Geopolitically, the mutual xenophobia between the US and China is
surging. The recent international crisis, which is still continuing
in full force, over an NBA employee tweeting a mild expression of
support for the protesters in Hong Kong, is an example.
My point is that everywhere you look, the world is becoming more and
more dysfunctional.
P.S.: Here's something exciting. A Chinese negotiator is at the White
House right at this very moment discussing trade negotiations, and the
euphorically hopeful traders have the DJIA up 500 points. What will
happen if there's no agreement?
P.P.S.: By coincidence, there's breaking news of a "substantial
phase one deal," and now the DJIA is up 510.
P.P.P.S.: Now only up 430.
