I was about to post a similar comment, but was hesitant to do so because I didn't want to create a big dust up in the comments and be accused of not being patriotic or supporting the troops. It was refreshing to see that someone else thinks the same as I do. I am a veteran, and yesterday everyone in the office took the time to "thank me for my service." It took a lot for me to just nod and walk on, I really wanted to explain that they have nothing to thank me for, my services benefited corporations and billionaires, not the common man. And as you mentioned, none of them would care enough to "thank me for my service" unless there was a photo op to be had. Fortunately no wars started during my time in and I got out alive and in one piece.

I always steer people away from military service when asked. It's an honorable path in concept, but in practice, the service is just a gang of enforcers doing the bidding of corporate America.
