That's a very, very interesting question that you raise. How fast
is the world changing?
Of course, it depends on what you're measuring. I have the feeling
that you have a particular measure in mind that isn't changing
very rapidly.
Then you get into another question: What do you mean by changing? Do
you mean increasing? Do you mean decreasing? What about something
that oscillates up and down -- it's always changing but never goes
anywhere. Does that count?
It's worth noting that the cable news programs claim that the world is
changing incredibly quickly. Today they're pointing to the rapidly
moving impeachment circus farce. But there are also riots and
demonstrations going on in lots of countries -- much more than usual.
Here a couple of things that I refer to all the time:
- Public debt. This has been increasing exponentially for years.
As the saying goes, if something can't go on forever, then it won't.
- Nationalism and xenophobia. This isn't easily measurable like
public debt, but nationalism and xenophobia were at their lowest
in the 1990s, then began rising with the rise of Generation-X in the
2000s, and today is very high in many countries.
So is that what you mean, or do you mean something else?
Ooooo,.. excellent questions!! (..I've refilled the large glass of Merlot, and am therefor fueled up quite nicely!)
I (personally) have always had a "problem" with time. I noticed that I lived on two "types" of time, two "continuums" of time: "Me Being Interested" time, and "Me Bored" time.
The first moves fast but it feels GOOD (aka "I'm a freakin' genius!"). The second moves like cold caramel and it is sheer TORTURE (aka "I'm an overwhelmed scared rabbit and the wolf is RIGHT THERE..!!!!").
Only in the last half-dozen years of so have I (FINALLY!) said "FUCK YOU!" to those who have always tried to use/manipulate people (aka: me) by preying on the weaknessess of my "rabbitness" while undercompensating me for my "geniusness".
..and I'm OLD(ish),..! and a habitual late bloomer, so, yeah, I'm a bit aggravated at my stupidity.
So, what is my perception of the world changing? And what do I base that on?
The present world is changing at a slower rate than it has in the past, BECAUSE (to me) the seeming "acceleration (of change)" is an illusion created by human minds to justify their "aging".
I was too busy dealing with my continual "wolf threat" and searching for my all-too-short episodes of "genius" to bother with the "luxury" of creating that illusion of "worldwide acceleration of change" that everyone else was so "self indulgently" obsessed with.
Therefore, the world hasn't changed all that much to me since I was a little kid. And the continual "chicken little-ing" of those silly folks on the street and on the TV has been alternatively amusing and annoying, and/or both.
When I discovered the concept of "asymptotic curves" it explained the meaning of God (we'll get to that leap of logic eventually!) as well as the meaning of "impossible", and "holy shit chaos".
"Nature doesn't do abject ridiculousness, and asymptotic trends MUST produce ridiculousness, therefore seeming asymptotic trends (such as any trend created by humans or animals or life-in-general or 'chemistry' or 'physics') will be dealt with by nature via chaos." <--Quote from the 3rd Lemur from the left.
"Holy Shit Chaos" should be the expected result of the aforesaid "ridiculousness", but because people are obsessed by their freakishly created illusion of "normalcy" they fail to expect the inevitable "holy shit chaos", and resent it's necessary intrusion into their lives.
You got two choices: Resentment or Happiness.
Resentment makes the universe interesting/sufferable, but mucks up happiness.
Happiness make the universe understandable, but increases suffering.
Suffering and Happiness are not opposites.
Anyway,. back to to the question as to how fast the world is actually changing...
..it's moving along as it always has,.. the proximity of the next holy shit chaos episode is best assessed by the stink of stale perspiration from those who will be forced, and volunteer, to fight the putative purveyors of said "chaos" (aka: the supposed existential threat).
..therefore, sniff not far late adolescent pits for FRESH stench, but rather sniff them for STALE stench!
THAT... is the stench of imminent proximal holy shit worldwide war.

..right,... another pour of the bottle is in order...
I'll get to that "God" thing shortly...
