Anyway, the debacle came when my wife needed to sign the lease. She was told to sign into the portal, but wasn't given a code. The portal asked for a code. So she asked the office for the required code and they gave it to her. Now, you would think that, knowing she needed to sign the lease too and that she wasn't in the system, they would have provided the code with the lease and instructions. You would be thinking wrong. That's the wrong way to think when you live in a world where Gen X Debacles are the norm. The way you have to think is, "What are they going to fuck up today?" In other words, expect it.

Having said that, you know what happened. She entered the code and it didn't work.

Then she wrote an email to the office and didn't receive a response.

So tomorrow, after I finish smashing the bots, I will probably spend the rest of the day on this. Hopefully it will only take the rest of the day.

I have now gotten a short breather from tackling Gen X Debacles and have a resolution to this debacle.

First, as far as the code goes, first thing the next morning, we received this email:

Good morning!

I hope you are both doing well. (Higgenbotham's) registration code (the one she gave my wife) is the one listed above. Yours is XXXXXXXX. I apologize for any confusion. Can you try this and let me know?

The code worked.

However, at this point we weren't quite done. She had also asked for a copy of the renter's insurance to complete the approval process and, once the lease was signed, I emailed her to say that I thought I'd given her a copy of that in September. She replied immediately that she would check the file. 5 hours later, this message was received:

Your renters insurance is good to go, I have it here in your file. I apologize for any confusion.

The above is not the exception. It is now normal and to be expected.

New Gen X Debacle Regime

Recently, I've been talking about spending more and more time on Gen X Debacles after I spend the morning smashing the bots.

Today Gen X Debacles entered a new regime. We might say there was a "regime change," as a new type of Gen X Debacle hit while I was smashing the bots.

The debacle started when I placed orders to get out of stocks and got an error message saying the following (even though the order inputs were correct):

After not being able to get out of this stock near the high of the first hour or so due to this repeatedly happening, the orders started being accepted again and I was able to get out at lower prices and clear my position.

I then entered a new position in another stock and was able to make trades, but the system was backed up and indicated I still owned some shares when I no longer did.

That's where it gets interesting.

Because the system still "thought" I owned shares even though my accounting indicated I didn't, I did a test. I attempted to sell shares I didn't have and the system accepted the order. So if I had trusted the system to account for my ownership of stocks, I would have sold shares that I didn't have in an account where I am not allowed to go short. Since I didn't do that, I don't know how that would have been handled, but you can be sure that many people did do just that. In fact, I had attempted to communicate with the brokerage on the topic, but didn't receive the usual immediate response, probably because they were backed up with customers who had this issue.

Now let's step back a bit and look at this from the proverbial 20,000 feet. How is this going to work if there is a generational stock market panic and people start panic selling, but the systems are unable to account for how many shares they have?

I should have wrapped up this post by saying that after an hour or so the system got caught up and showed that I no longer owned any stock.
