The Cleveland Fed is predicting 7.26% CPI for January (the rigged way of calculating CPI). So they don't think we are past the peak yet.

I am fascinated that Americans think that their economists have a rigged way of calculating CPI data! Cool thinks that 7% CPI is in reality 12 - 16% and Vince agrees that CPI is rigged. If there was any substantiation of massive manipulation of CPI data that would be world news! I am sure that small errors are made; for instance a product that is no longer available is substituted by another; is it exactly right, etc.
You guys have fantastic economists and economic institutions and economists try to get things right, not manipulate data so that no one knows whats going on. The USA is not communist China!

The arguement is that measurement of inflation needs to be a fixed basket approach, whereas the USA government is using a substitution basket approach.
In my opinion you can only using a fixed basket for recent year measurements - the world is changing too fast, and consumer choices are changing too fast to use a fixed basket in the long term. The fixed basket will produce comparison errors.
So in my opinion the USA government has got it right by using a substitution basket approach (which is what I would have expected from the world's largest economy)

Productivity is increasing and relative costs reducing. For instance there is a lot less material in a consumer electronic product now versus 1990; and factory assembly methods have improved, and lower cost factory labour has also reduced costs e.g. China
All this doesn't mean that there isn't currently a serious inflation problem. Vince makes the point that the PPI is above 9%!! The figure that caught my attention was 6.3% on food. Inflation on food is a formula for trouble especially from the poor
