The weaponization of commodities in a world that is increasingly turning multipolar and where legacy trade links and commercial bridges are burning down metaphorically (and in some cases literally) is accelerating.
Chile's President Gabriel Boric stunned the world on Thursday when he said he would nationalize the country's lithium industry, the world's second largest producer of the metal essential in electric vehicle batteries, to boost its economy and protect its environment.
Looks like thinking contracts are on the menu.
Boric energetically pledged to lead a government that represents all citizens, stressing he will reach beyond his leftist base.
Boric faces a raft of challenges from an economic slowdown, high inflation and a split legislature that will test his deal-making abilities to push through reforms in healthcare and pensions, while toughening environmental regulation.

The media continues its technique of hear ye: “G20 Summit: What you need to know now.” (It doesn’t tell the truth so why presume we would want to hear it?)
The media presented the illusion that Schwab addressed the G20 and re-launched The Great Reset — I briefly got taken in by the WEF marketing trick. Schwab did not address the G20... he turned up on the sidelines with a corporate-sponsored workshop called the B20.
The B20 is a private conference launched at the G20 Summit in Seoul in 2010, as the “official business group that leads engagement with G20.”
This is his snake oil technique, as Joaquin Flores of Strategic Culture points out, of mimicking the names of governance bodies, and signing memoranda of understanding with intergovernmental institutions. Thus WEF Agenda 2030 sounds like UN Agenda 2030, etc). “Part of this is to get controlled media to report B20 talking points as if these were the predominant ones at G20.”
Though president Vladimir Putin did not attend — sending foreign minister Sergei Lavrov instead — he issued a statement: “Banks, with all due respect to our financial institutions, drink blood from people right to the grave.”... money circus
As for the march sweeps upcoming we will see what else can be screwed up or set straight.
Chin will be left behind under the three mountains of abuses. Common souls called it straight. We shall see what develops.
Mexico nationalized its lithium deposits last year, and Indonesia banned exports of nickel ore, a key battery material, in 2020.
"This is the best chance we have at transitioning to a sustainable and developed economy.
We can't afford to waste it," Boric said in an address televised nationwide.
You had been warned what dumping did to our segments. You ignored it.
