Nearly 70 percent of Taiwanese are willing to go to war if China were to attempt to annex Taiwan by force, a survey released by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy yesterday said.

How does this sound: China begins with a total suspension of all trade to Taiwan while simultaneously declaring a naval blockade of the island. China, on the same day, seizes the Senkaku Islands, a fait accompli. What would America do? If America tries to move against China, North Korea sucker punches South Korea. Personally, I think this is exactly where all this is heading.

If China tries a naval blockade of Taiwan, the US would aid
Taiwan in breaking the blockade, and a war would result.

If China tries to seize the Senkaku Islands, then Japan would
declare war, and the US would aid Japan in defending the
islands, and a war would result.

If China tries any of these things, they would start by declaring war
against the US, and launch a bunch of ICBM's hoping to cripple the US
military before we could respond (similar to Japan's attack on Pearl
Harbor).

Would China bother to declare war? Why not just a surprise attack?

If it comes to direct war between China/Taiwan and China/Japan the US will remain neutral to avoid the above scenario ( unless we've established a reliable ABM/Stealth ICBM retaliation system beforehand). The Chinese general who back in the late 1990s, who when publicly questioned on this scenario said that the US would not Sacrifice Los Angeles for Taipei was and likely will ultimately be proven correct. The Reason For this is simple Nations place national integrity a higher priority than the integrity of International "rights and Wrongs". The above sentence is also the reason why a Nuclear First Strike on North Korea is Inevitable at this point; because the US will act to eliminate the direct threat regardless of whether Seoul is devastated in the process.
