This week we are making Marc Weitzmann’s The Fall of Europe free for non-subscribers. It is a sober, searing look at a continent in which the failure of the assimilationist model for Muslim immigrants is now threatening to undermine the basic foundations of the state. From Brussels to Birmingham, large areas of major cities have become no-go zones governed by strict Islamic law and populated by bearded street preachers and women in burkas. The lingua franca in these zones is hatred of Western cultures and norms, which is often expressed in both rhetorical and actual violence towards Jews. As a result, many Jews who long considered themselves to be French, English, or Belgian are leaving countries that they can no longer trust to safeguard their faith or identities, or to protect them from being physically attacked in the streets or in their homes.
