China finally approves an mRNA COVID vaccine—but only for some foreigners

Two years after the first countries approved the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID vaccine for domestic use, China will finally allow the mRNA vaccine to be used domestically—but there's a catch.

On Friday, China confirmed in a press briefing that it would let German nationals receive the BioNTech COVID vaccine, which uses mRNA technology, in exchange for German health authorities on Wednesday approving China's Sinovac jab for Chinese nationals living in Germany.

The statement from China’s foreign ministry clarifies an earlier announcement by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his trip to Beijing that BioNTech would be made available to foreign nationals in China.

But Beijing's decision to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech jab for a sliver of China's population highlights the country’s uneasy relationship with mRNA vaccines and shots developed overseas as Beijing embarks on an exit from its tough COVID-zero policy, which will likely cause a massive outbreak.

Both the U.S. and the European Union have offered mRNA COVID vaccines to China, but Beijing has rebuffed their requests.

“Practice has proven that the vaccines in our country are safe and effective,” the National Health Commission’s spokesperson told foreign ambassadors on Friday, continuing that Chinese vaccines could “protect the health of the Chinese people as well as people in some other countries.”

China has yet to approve any mRNA vaccines for widespread use in the country. The only people in mainland China who can get any mRNA shots are German nationals, who can get BioNTech’s vaccine under a deal agreed between Beijing and Berlin. (In September, Indonesia approved an mRNA vaccine from Walvax Biotechnology becoming the first country to approve a Chinese-developed mRNA shot, ahead of Beijing)

The Beijing-based biopharmaceutical company Sinovac is behind the CoronaVac, an inactivated vaccine.

It works by using killed viral particles to expose the body's immune system to the virus without risking a serious disease response.

By comparison the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are mRNA vaccines. This means part of the coronavirus' genetic code is injected into the body, triggering the body to begin making viral proteins, but not the whole virus, which is enough to train the immune system to attack.

"CoronaVac is a more traditional method [of vaccine] that is successfully used in many well known vaccines like rabies," Associate Prof Luo Dahai of the Nanyang Technological University told the BBC.

By the second year of the pandemic [2022], heart attacks for the 45-64 age group increased by 19.6% and for the 65 and older group had increased by 13.7%.

However, it was the youngest age group [25-44] that had the highest increase of nearly 30%.

Did You Know Likely CCP-Owned Company Was Involved In Developing Pfizer Vaccine?

Pfizer was the only vaccine developer to refuse US government funding for the vaccine. Why refuse US government funding and then position yourself as the leading vaccine? Every other vaccine developer accepted money from USG except Pfizer. But then instead of accepting US government money, Pfizer was glad to accept investment from one of the co-owners of China's National Pharmaceutical Company, or Sinopharm, China's state-owned vaccine developer. The claim that the co-owner of China's state-owned Sinopharm, which is Fosun, is supposedly a 'private' company and not synonymous with the CCP just is not credible. The CCP has its hands on everything. And if you look at everything that Fosun owns, there is just no way that a private company could own such a diverse range of assets around the world.

Fosun jointly owns China's Sinopharm along with the Communist Party. Fosun invested hundreds of millions of seed capital into the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine back in March. Anybody heard about that happening? I think Americans have the right to know this before they take the irreversible decision to take the vaccine. The vaccine may be fine but a German company developing a Chinese-funded vaccine (at least in part) along with a Chinese conglomerate with obvious links to the CCP really have no moral right to make money off a pandemic that Chinese themselves spread. Imagine, they caused all this chaos and economic damage and now want to make money on top of it through the vaccine. And who knows what the health implications are for this vaccine, which is being literally forced into peoples' arms.
