Well, we have all seen how sanctions work to change nation's actions in Iran and North Korea.

I hope that's true. But I seriously doubt it.

If he has to become Stalin, and put similar systems in place (by similar means), he, and his cronies, will do it.

So if there isn't another Russian revolution right quick, this is where things will head.

Plenty of people have been mistaken about Russian resiliency and resolve in the past. Once Putin decides the break with the West is unfixable, I think he will go down this path.

Right now it is a very chaotic situation, so any kind of timeline would be only a guess.

If/When Putin starts going down the Stalinist path, he will blame the Ukrainian resistance on NATO, and that when things will get really ugly.
He's not anywhere on the ropes, and not anywhere near "Stalin" or "Hitler", appeals you and John have made. For being intelligent, this is one of the most embarrassing things I've seen on such a good forum otherwise. There are a few topics that people really get short circuited around here on. The other great example was how over half the forum thought the clot shots were somehow legit or good, or meant well. That was super embarrassing and almost a reason to exit the forum entirely, it's that sad that someone can't understand that, showing you how their thinking is really quite emotion/fear driven to not see that situation clearly.

I didn't say he was Stalin right now. I said that if he needs to, he will become like Stalin, and treat his own people (and Ukrainians) the way Stalin did.

Is your position that like Mr. Xenakis, this Russian/Ukraine incident will progress to "all out" European war? Why would a Stalin persona re-emerge?

Yes, that is my position.

I believe that Putin will entirely militarize and put the "clamps down" on his domestic population, fully mobilizing them for war. Along the way he will continue to "beat the drum" that NATO has been out to destroy them all along, and that only be defeating them, can they return to their former lives and national pride.

How long will this progression take, Navigator?

I am worried that if I make a specific prediction, say like I did for mid Feb kickoff of Russian attack on Ukraine, you will fault me the day it doesn't come true :)

There is a lot in play right now. The war itself, EU reaction (or non-reaction), the possibility of economic disruption, Chinese action and so on. Very hard to put a timeline together as any of this stuff could (or rather will) impact it.

You make a good point, Navigator :)
I was thinking in terms of within a power of two or so.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky said in an interview on FRANCE 24 that Putin fears assassination and is showing signs of senile dementia. He also said that invading Ukraine was suicide.

This next year should be pretty interesting and exciting. Not in a good way.
