For those who think an invasion of Ukraine will not affect us, I offer the following. While the EU is trying to secure its supply of gas through appeasement, it is perhaps forgetting that the Ukraine is the largest producer of grain, which if controlled by a Putin authority, would then increase its stranglehold on Europe bringing it to its knees.

Our future is being threatened no less than it was in 1939.
The EU is on the right side of history. Enough EU members recognise that this is a Ukraine-Russia issue and not a Russian attempt to rule Europe, even if you don't. Up to now the Ukraine has refused to negotiate its differences with Russia. The idea that the US or others should talk on their behalf is absurd because Ukraine is not a NATO or EU state, neither is it a liberal democracy.

A Ukraine-Russia issue? Like in 1938 it was a Czechoslovakia-Germany issue? Do you seriously believe Putin will be happy to stop at the Ukraine-Poland border, or the Belarus border, or Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania? He’s made it crystal clear he wants to restore the former Soviet Union and control over as many of its neighbours as possible. He needs to be made aware as soon as possible and as firmly as possible that this is not going to be allowed to happen.
Why should Ukraine concede territory to Russia as part of “negotiating its differences”? Why, conversely, doesn’t Russia guarantee not to invade someone else’s sovereign territory?

I think he was talking of the collapse of the USSR being a disaster for his country. Please give us evidence that he has made it 'crystal clear he wants to restore the former Soviet Union.......'

Putin is of the KGB and of the generation that grew up during the years when the Soviet Union was strong. If he says it was a disaster that it collapsed, you can be sure he wants to re-instate it.

What else are the tanks rolling into the Crimea, now in Kazakhstan, shooting down planes in Ukrainian airspace, fomenting dissent in eastern Ukraine about?

Putin flies bombers to all western borders to check out response, uploads picture of hypersonic missile hitting Florida. NATO takes this man at face value - he is a braggart and a bully !

1) We’re not the EU.

2) It’s not in out national interests to have Russia as an enemy.

He wants a new kind of empire, not USSR 2.0.

I think Hitler said something similar about “security”…..it’s the justification of all aggressors. Russia is the aggressor here. It’s completely unnecessary. Ukraine is no threat to them, so why not learn to live as neighbours, instead of being so defensive?

An analyst on the BBC this morning said that Russia was an autocracy,
while Ukraine was a liberal democracy.

I was half asleep when I heard it, but I think he said that
autocracies always collapse, while democracies are chaotic but they
survive.
