I do think that a couple of important points have been missed by the West, in that they don't understand Russia and especially not Putin

The first is the Russia has made sure that it is surrounded by vassal states for a very long time, about 300 years. This to protect the mother country. This was lost in 1991 with the break up of the Soviet Union, and the break up might have been tolerated except for the West's expansion of NATO, which again Russia has been complaining about for a long time. One of the telling things Putin said is that 'now maybe they will listen to me'

The second is that Putin clearly doesn't want democracy and he wants to create circumstances that work against democracy, especially on Russia's borders. And I do think that the West over elevates the merits of democracy and don't listen to alternative views; for instance the poor of Peru, with all their difficulties of living are definitely much more joyful that the average American who has many, many times the wealth. The West now mostly overlooks the purpose of life.

More and more, I'm hearing the Russian invasion of Ukraine being
described as a debacle. The Russians had expected to simply roll over
the Ukrainians, as they did in 2014. Instead, the initial phase of
the invasion is taking several days longer than planned, and the army
is running out of petrol and bullets, because of the long supply
lines.

There is street fighting in Kharkiv, which is Ukraine's second largest
city and is close to the Russian border, but troops attempting to
reach Kiev from Donbas in the east, from Belarus in the north, and
from Crimea in the south, have all met stiff resistance. The
Ukrainians have been much better trained than they were in 2014.

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy is being considered something
of a hero internationally. It was expected that he'd flee the
country, as Afghanistan's president Ashraf Ghani had fled. Instead,
Zelenskyy is remaining in Kiev. Each day he posts videos of himself
in the streets of Kiev. He says that he's the number 1 target of
Russia's bombs, and his family is the number 2 target, but he's
remaining defiant, and telling his people to fight the Russians, which
they are doing very effectively so far.

The fear is that Putin will double down on the invasion, with
substantial bombing of Ukraine's infrastructure, including fuel
depots. Putin used this kind of total destruction in Syria and
Chechnya, and it's feared that he will now do the same in Ukraine.

Russian media is being heavily censored. They have been ordered not
to use the words "war" or "invasion," but just to call it an
"operation." Of course, they're not allowed to report on Russian
casualties or setbacks.

On Tuesday of last week, Putin gave a speech which many analysts are
calling "unhinged."
