I am spending a lot of the time I used to spend on the site looking at the reports out of Ukraine.

The best and most up to date are still with MilitaryLand.net, which I think is run by a French guy.

Right now it appears that the Russians are trying to pin the Ukrainians in place along the start lines in the Donbas area while attempting a classic pincer movement behind them from Izium in the north and from Staromlynivka in the south (this is NNW of Mariopol). Neither pincer advance is making rapid progress, but they are advancing about 1km per day. (A "breakout" in military terms generally has about a 20km/day rate of advance). They have been making this progress each day for the last month.

There is also intel that suggests the Russians to the NE of Kherson, across the Dnieper river, may be massing to make another thrust towards Krivyih Rih (Krivoy Rog), but at this point I would say that is probably a feint.

The goal for the Russians is now to take both of the breakout provinces and the southern land extending to Kherson.

Russian deaths are probably around 25K. This means their wounded casualties would be about 50-75K. This is significant (as Russia is just using its standing army), but to put it into historical perspective, Great Britain lost about 60K on just the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916 (about 20K dead, 40K wounded).

I believe that a reasonable estimate for Ukrainian casualties are about 5K dead, 15K wounded. So the Ukrainians are at a 4 or 5 to 1 kill ratio. This is quite good, but also in line with loss ratios for an attack against a fortified defense. And, of course, a lot of the Russian losses are due to unrealistic plans, poor tactics, and poor execution.

The Russians have not been stopped, but are making very slow progress. One of the main reasons is that they are using 1917 tactics, with somewhat more modern weapons. Their method is for an artillery barrage, and then a "wave" type assault (think of "going over the top" as such an assault).

It remains to be seen what the Russians can accomplish by May 9, "Victory Day", but it doesn't look like they can get more than 10-15 Km more out of each pincer, which would still be insufficient to cause a Ukrainian collapse. To do that, each pincer would need to advance about 30Km from current spearhead positions. This is because the main supply route into/out of Ukrainian Donbas positions is the parallel road/rail lines going from Dnipro to Pavlohrad to Pokrovsk . You need to be within 20Km of the supply route to disrupt it with artillery fire.

In Mariopol, the Russians have no choice but to put the Avostal steel plant under siege. The reason the Russians cannot take it is that there are six stories of underground nuclear bunkers under the place, built to house/protect the workers and others from nuclear attack during the cold war. The only way to end this for the Russians is to use gas and cut the water supply (and I bet the place has decent cisterns, so that last bit may not be possible). It is literally a modern version of Fort Vaux at Verdun.

Russian ambitions are to take all of Ukraine and the Baltics, and even try to regain the old Cold War boundary, but it is impossible for them to do this without a total mobilization of both the population and economy (and even then, it is QUITE a stretch at this point). But, given Putin/Russian pride, I don't see how they can get out of this mess without attempting to do that.

The threat for nuclear use is just that, a threat. If they were about to do it, I would expect some kind of ultimatum to be issued first (such as all Ukrainians must lay down their arms and NATO accept the Russian pre-war demands).

I think that the Russians would have already used gas, but they are actually afraid of what NATO might do in response.

Here are some other issues that we should keep in mind:

I have seen reports that the ammunition sent to Ukraine at this point represents close to a DECADE of NATO production. The number one expended supply in war is ammunition. Running out of it is VERY bad.

The Germans are saying one thing and doing another. They say they support Ukraine, but don't send heavy weapons. They say they are increasing military spending, but then it isn't in their submitted budgets. They say they have cut off Russian banks, but they haven't. They say they are going to get off of Russian natural gas, but they are still buying it at normal levels.

Most of NATO may be unified, but the Hungarians and Slovakians are probably pro-Russian at this point, while the Germans are actually attempting to "stay neutral".

While having Finland and Sweden join NATO is an overall good thing, the timing is now pretty bad, and will fit into the Russian narrative of "NATO wants to encircle and destroy Russia".

Putin's health does appear to be very bad, but his demise would not necessarily mean the end to this. You can always get someone even worse, and only someone who has been successful during the past 20-25 years of Putin's reign will be positioned to take over. Russia would NOT turn into a democracy if/when Putin dies. Not unless there is the equivalent of another Russian revolution. (The FSB crowd would not hesitate to do what Gorbachov wouldn't do - shoot people in the streets).

Any thoughts on what Putin’s health woes are? I’ve heard Parkinson’s disease, which morphs into dementia and impacts cognition, but it’s all speculation based on his behavior and pictures.
