I was talking with my uncle who is 88 and served in the USAF during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He found it a bit funny that Putin is having a “hissy fit” about America and NATO sending weapons to Ukraine. He told me about the pilots that he worked with flying against Migs with “North Korean” pilots, that were Russians and Chinese. He said the American pilots did not care, that they wanted to fly against and shoot down the best that the “commies” had. He said they were concerned at first about the Russian SAMs in North Vietnam, but he said the USAF “got their numbers and figure out how to make them hurt. Putin did not think this through like the old Russian chess players. He is a punk from the Soviet times.” Got to hand it to an old-timer to tell it how it is.

You break the law, you are charged with a crime, and you go to trial. I used to work in a court house. That was how it worked when I was there. Pre-trial detention was the norm. Prison overcrowding meant people, yet to be convicted of anything, were kept in overcrowded cells. And some did far less than storm the Capital.

If you stormed the Kremlin in Russia, you would have been tortured to death by now.

P.S. Russia has lost at least 28,00o troops in Ukraine. 50,000-70,000 have been wounded.

We may be starting to see the market meltdown that would come before a major economic downturn.

As I understand it, most of the stock market gains since the last major hiccup (2008) were in the FAANG stocks (plus probably Tesla). FAANG being Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google.

Netflix is down almost 70% YTD. Amazon got hammered, Facebook had been down as much as 50% YTD, (now just over 40), Apple is down some, and Google is down a bit more than 20%. (Tesla down about 25%, but given what's going on with Musk, this could also go down suddenly).

Once panic starts in a speculative market, it will not be possible to stop it. Especially not given current economic conditions, levels of debt, and current political/fed leadership.
