It is a devil's choose on this one. Do they admit their complicity of SIS, an integral but out of control part of Pakistani Government, in knowing the Laden location all along, or do they plead the total incompetency of not knowing anything in their own military garrison town for 9 years. One way draws retribution and fracturing of government and of the remaining ties with the West and removes all cover, no matter how feeble. The other way draws enmasse ridicule and lampoonery of Pakistani bureaucrats who are for the most part intelligent people but with no power over the matter. Easy to see which choice has to be made. Not that I feel bad for the bureaucrats. They chose the bed they sleep in. But it is another step in the absolute breakdown of civil authority that is gradually arriving and the return to military dicatatorship. As in Egypt, when that day comes the choices available to the military may not be pleasant. Dealing with a broken down economy and starvation and fuel and water shortages leads to bad regimes and uneasy control - even without the religious schisms that are already tearing their societies apart.
