The most obvious answer is the long time Russian empire territory of Bessarabia which provided a militarily defensible position on the southwest border lands of the Eastern European plain.
That is the same massive, tank friendly, Eastern European Plain, where the largest tank battles in the history of the world were fought in World War II.

The Russian govern-ate of Bessarbia granted Russia by 1812 Treaty of Bucharest from the Turkish Empire ( Ottoman Empire ), and subsequently recognized by all the governments of Europe, and Soviet Empire sovereignty was again recognized after World War II by the international community.
Only in the last few years, has the EU insisted Ukraine and Moldova erect effective border crossing between the historic parts of Bessarabia.

As shown on the link immediately below historic Bessarabia includes the Ukrainian Abalsts above and below modern day Moldova plus modern day Moldova. These are important from a military standpoint because they tie the defensive line from Carpathian mountains to Black Sea, and everything in between.

Russia could avoid taking any part of Moldova, except the Trans-D'Niester portion it already has, by militarily controlling the Ukrainian border with Moldova to the Southern Bug River in Ukraine and/or it could take some, or all, of modern day Moldova.
Moldova is not yet part of the EU nor NATO, so the Obama/Cameron/Merkel doctrine says NATO will not intervene militarily even if MOLDOVA was attacked.
The military defense value is illustrated a little better at the below links. You will note Bessarabia, unlike Moldovia, ties the defense line to the Carpathian Mountains above and the Black Sea below, and requires an invader from the South or Southwest to cross three defended rivers to get to the East European plain( or go over the Carpathian Mountains, or use ships on the Black Sea to go around).

If talks fail, what will Russia take for military purposes ?
