Darn it John, it is starting to play out like you said it would. All that is needed now is for Russia to get plugged in with US and then all of the pieces are "on the board and in play".

I was reading today about American Loyalists moving into the Ontario area of Canada during?post Revolutionary war to start a new life. The local Indian population was decimated by smallpox etc that they had no resistance to. It struck me how this has played out so many times throughout history and it has to result in some stress fractures as the locals get tired of the "migrants". Lowy has a nice comparison on Cambodia during the 1970's and the difference there was that they were not welcome and, for the most part, eventually went back home.
The Cambodian refugee crisis had a solution, but one that reflected a very different set of circumstances from what is occurring in Europe now. Most importantly, the majority of refugees hoped to return to their own country. What seems to mark out the current crisis is the hope of most of the migrants to move permanently to new homes.
(Uh oh)
