Dear John,
Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it.
1) China wants to be a power house in the world not only because China used to be the most developed country in the world for a long time but also because all the invasions, humiliating treaties signed after major military defeats since the Opium War during the Qing dynasty with western countries led by GB, France, Russia and Japan. Treaty of Nanking which was the first one (GB), Treaty of Aigun (Russia), Treaty of Tientsin, Convention of Peking, Treaty of Maguan (Japan), Boxer Protocol, Twenty-One Demands are the notable ones. Those are enormous losses in terms of wealth and territory. The old Summer Palace (called Yuan ming Yuan in Chinese) which was known for its extensive collection of garden and building architectures and other works of art, was burned by GB and French. I don't think anybody can find an example other than China that's being invaded (or raped) by such amount of countries, big and small. So psychologically, Chinese are sensitive, a hard way is learned that if you fall behind, you will be beaten.

2) China doesn't feel sense of security right now and I don't believe anybody will if you were Chinese and live in mainland China. Look at the map and you will find why. Here I want to emphasize on India and other south countries. the relationship between China and India is not comparable with the relationship between US and Canada. the population, the religion, the history, the economic status and so on. We often proud of long history, but this can also be a heavy burden for the people who live nowaday on the soil. the history of US and Canada is relatively short, people share the same ideology and US is so dominant on every aspect. In terms of other southern countries, I need to dig more, but I know the Chinese Communist Party wants royalty. CCP doesn't like other countries surrounded that's being supported by CCP before betray him. One outstanding example is what Vietnam did after Vietnam war. So Vietnam has a history of stepping on two boats.
3) China wants south China sea is because of the shipping lanes, crude oil from middle east are through there. This is no strange considering the growing size of the economy. It's a life line, live or die. One thing I'd like to mention is that when I was in the elementary school in China during 70's before the economic boom, those islands in south China Sea belong to China was already written in the textbook. So it's not like China wants it overnight.
Overall, history is a burden and China is doing it's part. You will get beaten if you fall behind. Hard lesson learned from Western Countries. Definitely, while increasing its power, CCP also need to find a better way to deal with other countries. My wife always says, you earn respect. On the other hand, The United States, need to find a better way to make Chinese feel more secure. But for China, a more democratic system will earn more respect and flexibility.
I apologize for any improper words I used that already offended you. I was not very calm during my previous messages. You website did encourage me do more research. Sorry for the long post, I believe it will get shorter with improving of my writing skill.
Sincerely,
tx
