Perhaps I missed it, as I just skimmed the article, but I didn't' see anything in the article about China and/or lessons learned vis-à-vis China.

I believe you are making the same mistake John so often points out... You're trying to apply experiences from one generational period to another, and expecting the same outcome in the end. That's the entire point of GD. An action during on generation will get "x" response, while the same action during another generation will get "y". You're not going to get "x" response or results across the board.

the "lesson" (I think) was that we should try to understand why a adversary is acting a particular way, try to see their point of view, rather than respond to what our government and media are saying...the conventional wisdom about the Cuban Missile crisis is quite mistaken (which is what the article explains)...China is like Russia was (rising, but weak, surrounded), so they react to try to even the situation...it's an analogy, nothing to do with GD...
