Nato is Grid Locked - Germany is pushing a "Compromise"

Post by Reality Check »

Media reports indicate Obama believes he can offer Russia a face saving way to back down and withdraw Russia's occupation troops form Ukraine.

Germany, after close consultations between the leaders of Germany and Russia, has a better idea.

A face saving way for the U.S. and U.K. to back down.

The process would work very much like phase one of the take over of parts of Georgia by Russia.

Russian troops in Ukraine would be transformed from occupying troops, to monitors in Eastern Ukraine ( including Crimea ) and in Southern Ukraine, all under the auspices of the United Nations ( UN ) and/or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Russia has a veto in both those organizations, so once the "monitors" are in place, under an agreement negotiated between Germany and Russia, they could stay forever unless Russia agreed to a change in the agreement.

This way the Russian troops get to stay, Ukraine is prevented from exercising it's authority over it's own country by virtual of a U.N. Security Council resolution negotiated between Russia and Germany, Mr. Kerry and Mr. Obama are happy that Russia can move as many "monitoring troops" into Ukraine as Russia wants, in a 21st century way that is nice and legal under international law, and if Ukraine get's tired of this arrangement and attempts to exercise it's sovereignty in violation of a U.N. security council resolution, that Russia will never agree to change, then the Russian "monitors" can unilaterally become "Peace Keepers" and annex the portions of Ukraine that need protection from the lawless Ukrainian government that violated the resolution. The west will feel bad if such an annexation happens, but Ukraine would be guilty of violating a UN Security Council resolution so it would be all nice and legal, and the U.S. could point out that Ukraine brought this upon themselves.

It worked great for letting the west off the hook in Georgia, and the Germans are offering this to Obama as a face saving way for the U.S. to back down.

Any bets that Obama will not jump at this, or something that has the same net result ?

The U.S. mainstream media will spin such a "Compromise" as proof that Obama was correct, and negotiations and diplomacy are the best ways to solve military disagreements.

Everybody wins under such a compromise, except the Ukrainians of course, who have the honor of losing their country legally by virtual of a U.N. Security council resolution, rather than by war. Never happen ? Ask Georgia how easy it is to get your entire country back, once the UN has given parts of your country to "Russian Monitors".
