In honor of the Pope's arrival in the US, I thought it might be interesting to list the generational types of the popes of recent history.
Pius X, 1903-1914, Italian: Hero Generation
Benedict XV, 1914-1922, Italian: Artist Generation
Pius XI, 1922-1939, Italian: Artist Generation
Pius XII, 1939-1958, Italian: Prophet Generation
John XXIII, 1958-1963, Italian: Prophet Generation
Paul VI, 1963-1978, Italian: Nomad Generation
John Paul I, 1978-1978, Italian: Hero Generation
John Paul II, 1978-2005, Polish: Hero Generation
Benedict XVI, 2005-2013, German: Artist Generation
Francis, 2013-present, Argentine: Hero Generation
Popes born before 1830 I have not included due to the uncertainty of Italy's generational timeline prior to the wars of unification (1859-1871). I am not sure that Italy's crisis war climaxed in 1815, but I suspect rather that the battle of Marengo (1800) was the climax of Italy's crisis war during Napoleonic times. But this requires more research.
Pope Francis is interesting because it should have followed given the above pattern that the next pope would have been of a Prophet Generation. But, due to being not only from a different country but from a completely different generational timeline, a Hero succeeded an Artist. It will be interesting to see not only where his successor comes from, but what generational type he will be.
