The Russell 2000 index of small stocks took out its 2018 low last week by a wide margin. This index has lost 35% since mid February. In mid February, it was below its 2018 high.

When people start to get scared the first sell their smaller riskier stocks. So I believe these usually lead the way. The big guys are seen as safer, and are held longer and so fall a bit behind in the crashing.

I agree. I believe the Russell is leading and the S&P will follow. The S&P has quite a few companies in it that can be considered "defensive" but that in my opinion will only be truly defensive for a brief time. One example of a company thought of in this way recently is Campbell Soup. Others would be big pharma, especially any pharma company that may benefit by developing a vaccine for coronavirus.
