I agree with you about immigrants. I have no problem with people coming here. Almost all of our ancestors came here looking for a better life and America has always been able to take the influx of great numbers of people. I tip my hat to any and all who came here, worked hard, and made a better life for themselves and their families.thomasglee wrote: ↑Fri Oct 29, 2021 7:07 amJohn always talk about how xenophobia grows during a crisis generation. Is it because of policies such as this one?
Biden Wants To Give Separated Illegal Immigrants $450,000 Per Person
Look, I've got nothing against LEGAL immigrants. I was married to a Korean woman for 30 plus years. My closest friend is black, and my current wife is Mexican. Minorities are not an issue with me. But I'll admit (and will all of my non-white friends) that policies such as the current administration is espousing rubs me raw. I'm not xenophobic, but I can see how and why many people turn anti-immigrant.
What I have a problem with is people coming here and not putting out effort, instead looking for US taxpayers to take care of them and their families, forever. This is the big problem today. I think the estimates are that the US taxpayer pays about $50k, per year, for every immigrant on assistance.
But this latest bit was so over the top it was shocking, even today.
Luckily, this will be part of the massive backlash against the Democratic Party. Unfortunately, it send the absolute wrong message to millions working hard, and to those thinking of coming to the US.
We are really hampered by the fact that we don't have a viable "guest worker" program. My guess is that Democrats won't allow such a program to be set up. I lived in Germany for years in the 1980s, and this is how they handled Turkish workers, who they desperately needed to do jobs Germans wouldn't do. The same thing would work here just fine, and we would have far less problems (and financial outlay) as a result.
