This is a very interesting conversation. Much better than name calling.
Maybe missing a bit from it is the social attitude. We're watching the world go nuts. Strategy works well for the sane individual but insanity is where we're heading at full speed ahead.
What do you think of strong Russian aggression happening together with, or preceding somewhat the Chinese. Our priorities are not aligned socially with military engagement. Afghanistan was a preview. That's just for next month to Sept timeframe. What's the chances it happens this year?

Americans didn't want to fight WW2. The week of the Pearl harbor attack, congress voted to end mandatory military service in an attempt to derail FDR's drive to war. The day after Pearl Harbor, congress assembled and declared war. Total mobilization and a war economy followed, including rationing, which my grandparents told me about. Everyone in my family either marched off to war or worked in factories. NO ONE in my family wanted war before Pearl Harbor. The sucker punch by the Japanese changed everything. I think it will be the same this time. I don't know how the immigrant population will respond. From what I have seen, I don't expect them to rally to the flag that has been generous to them and their families.

As international tensions continue to rise over whether the Russians
will invade Ukraine, the BBC World News on TV this morning enunciated
"Five Facts" about the situation:

• Fact 1 - Russia has troops on Ukraine's border and is
  suspected of hacking the country. America fears Russia will provoke
  an invasion by staging attacks on pro-Russians there.
• Fact 2 - Russia has failed in days of talks to get NATO to
  permanently exclude Ukraine and roll back its presence in Eastern
  Europe
• Fact 3 - Years of fighting with a pro-Russian insurgency in
  Ukraine's East has cost around 14,000 lives
• Fact 4 - Americans think a delayed winter freeze means a muddier
  Ukraine hampers an imminent ground offensive
• Fact 5 - As Russian troop numbers of Ukraine's border remain
  steady, the US thinks Putin hasn't decided to invade yet

With regard to "Fact 1" the Pentagon has warned of a Russian "False
Flag" operation where Russia would stage an attack on Russian forces
in Ukraine, and blame the attack on Ukraine, to use as a pretext for
war.

A no doubt minority view on Russia/Ukraine: Putin is a second-rate KGB bureaucrat who serves at the pleasure of the Russian oligarchs. They were miffed at the (albeit weak) sanctions imposed by Obama, but very pleased with Trump’s loosening of those sanctions. Now that Biden is re-imposing some of those sanctions, and threatening tougher ones should Russia invade Ukraine, they would rather that Putin refrain from an invasion. Putin is more or less pursuing the Kim Jong Un approach of bellicosity aimed at getting attention and thus getting relief from sanctions.

Therefore, he will continue to threaten, but refrain from attacking, pleasing his oligarch pals.

And so began a vicious circle, as the presidential administration and
Congress vied to see who could be tougher on Russia. Trump delayed
some of the strongest measures, but when pressured, either agreed to
them or introduced his own, declaring that “there’s never been a
president as tough on Russia as I have been.”

As a result, during Trump’s four years in power, a record forty-plus
rounds of sanctions have been slapped on Russia. Many of them are
enshrined in law, meaning they are here to stay.

Lars Findsen has been charged with using Danish resources in 2014 to
help the NSA spy on Angela Merkel.

Germany once again showing it’s true colours to the world. This isn’t going to end well and Germany will once again be the pariah of the world. I foresee massive sanctions imposed on Germany by the US and others if they continue to be Putins she dog, plus the other EU states will want to distance themselves from them. Doesn’t bode well for the future of the EU , we are well out of it.
