A bit like Hitler and his inner circle in his bunker, moving pins around a map that in no way reflected the reality of the situation.
If the Ukrainians are as determined not to give in, as they appear to be, the Russians having their troops enter the cities, rather than a sign of success, will be the beginning of a nightmare for them. If they stand back and seek to pulverise the cities with bombs and shells, the carnage will harden the attitude of the international community and enhance support for Ukraine.
Tanks and aircraft are of limited use in city fighting, as it becomes a war of attrition, man against man in the streets and rubble. It is also likely that modern effective weapons will increasingly find their way from the West into the hands of the defenders, from across the boarders.
In such a situation motivation becomes all important. It is unlikely the average Russian grunt will be anything like as motivated as an Ukrainian citizen soldier fighting for his city. This is for certain not going to be quick or a cake walk for Russia.
